What's the reason for this "war" between Star Wars Fanboys and Trekkies?

There's been a big discussion between fans of Star Wars and fans of Star Trek, but why is that? It is pointless trying to know which one is better, because Star Wars fans will always say "Star Wars" and Star Trek fans will always say "Star Trek". Personally I like Star Wars much more than Star Trek, but I think there's no need for this "competition". What do you think?

it dosent matter what any body says i love both movies or ideas but there is only one difference and that is you can find you love all the characters in Star Wars but in Star Trek there are very few characters that you love but it dosent matter to me. you can call me "Stawa-Trekie". i think there is no need to fight or start a debate which one is better, they are both not just better they both are great in there own universe i love George lucas and Gene Roddenberry for what they have given us in there beautifull ideas and movies.

I like both. I think maybe the technology of Star Wars and the battle against a defined enemy is what attracts people to it. Star Wars has the "force." The force is always being explored in various ways.
Star Trek on the other hand is more about the battle of wits. I look at it as a good old fashioned western set in the galaxy. As Star Trek has evolved, the technology has improved but it's start was pretty basic. I just saw the latest Star Trek in the theater. I could not break the tradition. I have seen them all in the theater.
For some reason, I have no copies of any of the Star Trek movies or programs but I do own every DVD except one of the Star Wars series. I have no idea why this is!

I like both too, but I don't agree that Star Wars, only, had the tech. If it were not for Star Trek, there would be no Star Wars. Lucas barely sold the other producers on the idea in the first place. He had very little cash for the movie, and that's why he hired "no names" to be the actors.
I do agree, however, that Star Trek is a western in space. That was a great comment. :)

IDK, either. I'm more of a Star Wars fan, especially after reading the comics and books of the Star Wars Expanded Universe! Plus, what is there not to love about the lightsabers, and the force! The Force Lightning, too! Oh, and who can forget the all wise, and all powerful Yoda! ^_^

Personally I like Star Trek better. But both have merits that are vastly different from each other. To compare them is like comparing an apple and a orange. Sure they are both fruit... but they are made up of very different from each other.
If I want to watch Ewan McGregor (Totally smoking hot) be a jedi, stuff blow up, loud noises, light sabers, and a vast amount of aliens then I go for a Star Wars flick.
If I want to watch a William Shatner (Totally fricking awesome and attractive in that classic ken doll way) be a starfleet captain, deep relationships, lots of space scenes, blinking lights, and mind melds then of course I am going to pick up the Star Trek.
Fighting is kind of silly. Admittedly I am not a Star Wars fan. I never really enjoyed the first trilogy, and only really watch the second because of my shallow reasoning that Ewan McGregor is attractive.
I have witnessed stupid Star Wars v. Star Trek fights, and I always think that it's silly. Neither are going to leave with a changed mind, and both are still going to fight for their side. What it really comes down to is do you want stuff to blow up, or do you want to see a close knit group of starfleet officers?

really, there's a war?
then i'm gonna get hit in between, i love star wars and star trek too much, they are unique and changed the world, send us a good message, there's nothing wrong with both of them
how would be the movies and series without obi wan, spock, data, and r2d2?
those are the most creative stories of all times, i love it :)

Having ead the book that was released several years ago about the debate of which is best. I still do not understand the fuss. I enjoyed the movies of both series. But I am a Star Wars fan, and my biggest problem with this when on sites or even talking to people seems to be that they think because I am a Star Wars fan (reading most of the books in the series and still reading) that it means I love all SciFi, and I don't.
But true fans of one or the other will alway think that the series they like best is the best. This is just something to debate about for those that enjoy debating the merits of such things.
