Another Idea On This Very Subject

We all buy socks in one form or another. Some are fancy and some are not. I don't buy fancy socks, I buy the pack of white socks that come to my calves as well as the shoe high type. Now we've all had socks wear out so much so that they'll get holes in them. There's three things you could do. One, which is what I do most often, is throw away the holey sock and keep the other one, providing it has no holes in it and put it in the back of my sock drawer. It sits there until another sock gets a hole in them and then I'll match the saved sock with the good sock so I'll have a pair again and throw away the holey ones. Silly I know but hey, after a while it'll be like saving money instead of having to buy another pack of socks again so soon. Now I do have a couple of different brands so if I run out of a matching pair then I'll use it as a make up excess wipe off rag. Girls, I'm sure you know what I mean by that! Now my mom will do the same thing except when she doesn't have a matching sock to match up with a good one then she'll use the sock as a dusting rag because it works so much better than any rag does. It makes your furniture look so nice and shiny. She has a few socks under her kitchen sink for this purpose. So what do you do with your odd sock? Throw it away with the holey one or do you keep it in hopes to have another good one to match it up with? Inquiring minds want to know! LOL Happy Mylotting my friends!

LOL I'm the same way hoghoney! Once I see a hole in my sock, I rip it to shreds! And into the trash can it goes! lol But if the other one doesn't have holes in it, I'll save it to pair up with another sock that it's mate had a hole in it and pair the two good ones together. I get what you mean about finger and toe nail clippings, I trim my mothers finger and toe nails for her because she can't do it anymore due to that horrible stroke she had and I clean it up every time while she hollers at me that she'll get it bla bla bla but I ignore her and get it anyway. lol

Hi Antiquelady! I wear socks all the time except when I'm wearing sandals. My feet get cold so easily due to having lupus. My hands and feet are the first to get cold in the winter time so I wear them all the time. I just started taking them off when I go to bed so my feet get some air.... some what but air nonetheless. I used to run barefoot all the time as a kid but unfortunately those times have gone to the wayside. It's one of the FEW things that I do miss about my childhood. My day was tiring as all get out because for the past two days hubby and I have been working the tree line along the driveway. We cut all the pines down and pruned the others and now it looks soooo much better but my body is feeling every bit of the work we've been doing. Hubby is going to bed soon and I won't be far behind him. I'm so dogged behind tired! lol

I have a friend that stays cold like that due to an illness she has. i burn up all the time & know that being too hot or too cold can both be miserable. i know u are tired. hope u rest well. take the day off tomorrow & get u some rest. yard work gets the best of me what little i can do. i bet yours looks real pretty. are your kids there yet? have a happy week.

I've been getting these socks that have some support in the arches area, not so much because they actually support the arches, but because they have been keeping my feet from swelling - very nice. So, generally speaking, they lose their streach before they get holes. And I do the saving them and making new pairs thing, but mostly I don't have too many wear out.

Are they diabetic socks? My dad wears those because he's a diabetic and it does help him with his circulation. He stretches his unmercifully a lot but he continues on wearing them until mom throws them out. lol

they aren't labeled as such, more to the arch support crowd - and since these are low, ankle height, they wouldn't really be much good for the diabetic crowd I had a few days where my feet were so swollen they were in lots of pain, so I got these socks, that was in 2005, and haven't had problems since.

It's funny that you bring this up now because I'm in need of new socks! I've already thrown a holey one or two away in the last couple of weeks. More are headed in the same direction. I wear mostly white socks because it goes better with what I have to wear at work. Sometimes I wear black socks and I do have some colored ones or goofy ones for holidays, like Christmas, but I usually only wear those when my feet are cold, especially in the winter. I do the same thing - I'll throw one away and match it up with another one that's still good. It's gotten harder recently because as I said, I need new socks! LOL When I end up with an extra sock that can't be matched with another, I usually just throw it away. A few months ago I decided to clean out my sock drawer. There were a lot I had been hanging onto in case I found its partner. I finally got rid of them to make room for the good ones.

I've done that too, hold on to the one in hopes the other will eventually show up or I'll pair it up with another that it's mate got holes in. We all run out of socks eventually for they all get holes in them from wear but this is an idea for you to keep in mind, when you get some more, you could save the one and pair it with another that loses it's mate. And if you have pets, look above at her response, she ties hers up for her dogs to play with or fills it with catnip for her cat! I like that idea and will try it next time I get a holey sock. lol

When i buy socks i buy several that are alike and when one gets ahole i throw it away and keep the other coz it matchs many more i have just like it. I have bought toe socks two pairs each. I dont wear them all the time but if one gets a hole i throw that one away then i still have another pair and a spare. They dont matter which foot they go on so it all works out. I also buy my booties that way, two matching pairs.

Oh cool! I'm not the only one who does this. lol It's a good way to save money like many other ways we've come up with. Anything to make that dollar stretch that extra mile especially in these trying times.

wow that was a good idea, keeping the one without hole and waiting for another one to have it paired... ... thanks for sharing. what i do with socks is that i use it as rags... even if the other one has no hole in it, it becomes a rag right away, but now i'll change it and do what you have said here... that would really save us money. i buy those white ones for my family and some colored ones... thank you

Hi jayrene! It's been a little while since I've seen you around! Good to see ya again! Thanks for letting me know my idea is a good one! I saw it as kind of minor and might be a little silly but hey, it does save money in the long run so I thought I'd give it a try and so far, a number of you have said it was a good idea so I'm glad I posted it. BTW, I have a few colored socks too but mostly they're white so it helps to be able to pair them up with another when one gets holes in them.

Ok here goes inquiring mind.....I throw mine in the trash. I don't buy white socks, but if I did the way you do it is a good idea. I have colored socks, so matching them up with an identical sock is impossible. I don't use them for cleaning, I like using the microfiber cloths for that. Does that answer your question for your inquiring mind, Next you will be asking what we do wih our holey undies, for you information, they go in the trash too, hehe

Oh dear Polly.... I love you so!! LOL I promise NOT to ask about underwear however, since you brought it up , I agree, they go into the trash can. Now my momma always told me to wear your best underwear when going out whether it be a date or to the store because one never knows when they'll end up in the ER or the "bedroom" LMBO!! (She really didn't say anything about the bedroom, I added that one LMBO!!)

My momma always told me about the underware thing too, not the bedroom part. I figured that out all myself, (I am one smart cookie, don't cha know). I will tell you when you do go to the ER because of an accident, they strip you of your clothes so quick, no one has a chance of noticing your undies. BTW, Love you too......

My husband and I are smart. I wear white socks, he wears black socks. If we have one left over we'll not only know whose is whose, but we'll be able to find a match eventually. We'll never get our socks mixed up. We're plain and boring in this department, but very very practical.

You know what danish? It's ok to be plain and boring as long as YOU are happy!! My best friend told me that I was a plain jane but in a good way whereas she's very loud and flashy with her clothes. lol I took that as a compliment as it was meant to be. Now, what I meant by the socks, say one of your white socks gets a hole in it and it's mate doesn't, throw away the one with the hole in it and keep the good one so if you get another pair that one has a hole in it and the other doesn't, you could pair the two good ones together and make a pair. Same goes with your husband's socks.

we buy socks in bulk at stores like walmart or individual socks at the dollar store. i find that my daughters are not that picky and will wear odd socks together. i see a lot of their friends doing that too!

Must be a trend in it's early stages? Girls are so picky about their clothes and to have girls that aren't has to be a relief to you and your pocketbook! lol Besides, one has to do what you can do and that's that, right?

Actually I keep sewing up the holey sock until it cannot be sewn anymore. My hubby wears thru the toes or heels fairly fast so I just sew them so they last a bit longer. Though I do also use them for dusting w/o them being an "old" or odd ball sock. NO big deal, dust is nothing compared to man sweat!

I've heard of doing that before and in fact, I used to when I was dirt behind poor and couldn't afford to buy new ones. Now I use them as rags or what ever. Hubby takes his and ties a bunch of them together for the puppies to play with. lol

Hubby had a dog (before we were togeather) that he trained to take off his socks. However the dog would chew them up or do whatever with them so he was constantly buying replacement socks.

If i loose a sock or have to throw one away if its one of my packs of socks i keep it because i will eventually loose or wear out another one but still have a pair. I tend to get given "fancy" socks with cool designs as gifts or you go to Ardene and they have them on sale for 10 for 10 dollars and thats just so cheap for socks i love getting them. Those socks i also keep and i end up making them into mismatched pairs to wear around home or when i give myself a home pedicure and need socks for something. I've ended up using them on my dogs to keep them from licking an injury to their leg I've seen my mom and dad use the mismatched pairs on bed frames (the metal ones) to cover them to keep them from damaging the walls.

I do not really buy very costly socks so I buy with the intention of excluding them from my wardrobe after a month or so. This helps me keep the shoes clean and my feet in a healthy condition. I sweat a lot and I have noticed that no brand can keep my feet dry and stink free. So I buy socks that are cheap and dispose them off after a certain wear time. bourne

Odor Eaters - This is just a shoe insert however it may work but there's also powder too that you can buy.
Have you tried the product called "Odor Eaters"? It's suppose to help with the sweating and keep your feet dry but I don't know for I've never used it. It comes in a shoe insert or powder to put in your shoes. It's worth a try if you haven't already. Good luck!!

Isn't it amazing that something as boring as socks can be a major discussion? LOL I do what you do, keep the good one and match it up when another sock bites the dust. I usually take the one with the holes and tie a knot in it and throw it my dogs' way. They LOVE getting a new toy! Each time I do that, I throw away the last holey sock toy I gave them. That way, I don't have to wash the old one, just toss it. (Dog toys really do get dirty with all their slobber and dragging them all over the place!) If the sock is a thin one, I cut it in half and stuff some catnip into it, then tie the end, assuming there are no holes in the toe part. That makes an excellent cat toy.

I had a chuckle over your comment about socks being a major discussion. lol Those are really great ideas too, pet toys although I've never thought about the catnip idea but I'm going to try it! My cats LOVE catnip! They go crazy over the stuff so I will keep that in mind! Thanks Marti!
