Hugs is wonderful but I have to admit that sometimes it does not work in every cases so sometimes a nice chat will make everything okay between both friends, I remember to be having more or less the same stuffs then we talked though it was very difficult at first but we eventually succeeded.

I think one of the best things you can do in a situation like that is listen. Most of the time they just need to get things off of their chest. Then you should let them know that you are there for them if they need anything. If you can do it try to make them laugh and lift their spirits up. Usually that helps them to forget about their problems for a little while. :)

I would say that the best thing I could do for a good friend would be just to let them know that I am there for them if they need me.
Making yourself available to a friend can be something that they would probably appreciate.
We as people have a need to feel acceptance. It is only natural.
Of course a hug is a nice gesture but simply listening and trying to understand a friend's point of view can do a great deal for them.

hear what they say, give a warm hug and let them cry on your shoulder.
