Haha well I prefer reading encyclopedias more than dictionaries. But if you have to choose between the two, what would that be?

I don't think you can really 'read' a dictionary or encyclopaedia, as they are more for dipping into to extend your knowledge. However, often, when I look up a date or something in an encyclopaedia, I find my interest is caught and read the article. Then at the end, when they offer further entries on the same topic, I go on to another article. Looking up a date often takes an hour or more this way! Dictionaries are just for looking up correct spellings and meanings. There's no attraction in sitting down with a dictionary for the afternoon. Interesting topic.

Haha but I sometimes do read dictionaries if I am really bored. To make it interesting I usually research for the history of the specific word. ;) Thanks for the response

Both are different thing. When you are interested in learning new words then you need a dictionary and when you are interested about countries, flora and fauna and general knowledge, then you will have to consult a encyclopedia. I love reading them both. In fact it depends on my mood, and on what I would like to read at that point of time, which one between those two I will prefer.

If you ask me to choose, of course i prefer to read the encyclopedia. It contains a lot of interesting articles that makes me not bored reading them. I only use dictionary when i am looking for some new words that i don't understand. I ever gone through reading dictionary for a week because i want to pass my spelling competition. That week, was my most boring days, because i had to read and spell all those words that i seldom use. And, more over, i had to read it over and over until i can memorise all those new words. Luckiy, my hardwork had paid me. I came second in that spelling competition and won me a cash money prize....

Congratulations ;) but you can make reading dictionary more interesting if you'll search for the history of each name :) at least you have a background for every word that comes in your vocabulary :)

Is there any other options? Because truly I don't like read both of it, heheh. I'm a story book lover, kind of novels, comics, or some other magazine. I think it is very boring to read something thick like dictionary. But if I really really have to choose one of the two, I prefer an encyclopedia because at least there are some story there to read, not only some list of words like a dictionary.

Haha same here.. I try as possible as I can to master the difficult words but my memory is not that retentive to recall those. words :) Maybe to make reading the dictionary more interesting you can think or research about the history of a specific word. :)

I also prefer reading encyclopedias rather than dictionaries... i only open a dictionary when i need to find the meaning of a certain work... or how to pronounce it properly... Encyclopedias are more interesting... because more knowledge can be gained by reading just one... but the main problem is that... we can't even bring one volume with us... because it can be very heavy...

I find it very enjoyable to read encyclopedias. It is very rich in information and very educational. I prefer Collier's or Britannica encyclopedias. There is agreat wealth of information there for any topic.

Definitely the encyclopedia. I would imagine that reading a dictionary would be extremely boring. All of that "dictionary jargon" gets old - and fast, don't you think? Encyclopedias just seem a little more..interesting and informative to me.

Hmmp... I love reading encyclopedias... they're much more interesting!! When I read dictionaries, I fall asleep!! AAhhhh!! Not very interesting!! It's fun reading encyclopedias (especially those with LOTS of illustrations) because you get to learn about lots of things, and it's just like you're reading a storybook... So, it's not boring... I go for encyclopedias!!! Vote!! =)

I haven't thought about that, i think i would like to read encyclopedias than dictionaries because in spite of they are so similar from each other, the encyclopedias have more articles and fotos and descriptions about an issue than the dictionary. Sometimes i flip through the pages of an encyclopeida to see all types of subjects and images. I like to read a art encyclopedia about the art movements and the paintings. And what types of subjects do you prefer to read in encyclopedias, cecillecarmela ?

Its not that i dont like reading such books , its just that i dont feel the need to read one every now and then. Im the type of person who dont enjoy reading books that are full of characters and have few pictures to see at all, thats why i find reading dictionaries particularly boring. But that doesnt mean i dont think they are usefull at all ;)
