i have tried twice to bring a second cat into the home. my 9 year old cat, Katy will become depressed and urinate on shoes and throw rugs every time. i end up finding a home for the second cat and after a week or so Katy returns to her old shelf, using litter box and wanting affection. My question is are there some cats that will never tolerate another cat in the home?

We have got six cats and yes there are fights not every day.The cats that i have are all different ages sizes etc.It took two weeks to realise a new cat was going to be staying with us for the other cats to except the new cat.All our cats have their own spaces in our house and they all eat out of the same bowl and wait their turn at feeding time. You have to give the cats time to sort out who is going to be the boss there for thats why there are fights.

it's rare i see it that bad.usually even if they can't stand each other, they'll settle into a tolerance after awhile.some it takes longer than others. i have a calico that seemingly hates all other cats, even her own brother, but she will go and sit by herself, and as long as he doesn't try to crowd her,she ignores him.

I know my cat wouldn't be able to handle having another cat in the house.there was only one other female cat that ever lived with me and they never got along.i tried several times to put them together but they always fought so i just gave up.Cats are buy nature territorial but i guess it depends on how there raised.

I have a cat named dog and shes 10 years old and she tolerates other cats as long as they dont get near her other wise she will beat them up and sometimes she beats on my other cats for no reason at all,so yes some cats just dont like to be around other animals.

Your cat is Marking their territorry .. they are queen of the castle and don't want to share their affection.... I had the same trouble once with my cats ... It seems if you bring a kitten in they will warm up to them more so than if its another adult ...

Younger cats will usually tolerate a new addition. My 8 year old cat refuses to accept a new cat in our home. They are indeed territorial...sorry to break the news.

Not just some cats- but all cats, if you keep them as pets. Cats never tolerate the presence of another cat- unless if the other one is it's wife or children. I have learned about this in ethology. Cats are territorial creatures. They have a territory- or their own area. If you keep a cat in a room, it regards it as it's territory. If some other cats enter their territory, they try to shoo them away. But since both are your pets, they will have no option other than co-exist. So they divide the room into new territories. They don't have markers or something like that to draw a line.. so they urinate and excrete around for marking the lines. If you clean them, they'll do that again! This can also be seen in the big cats- lions, tigers... The only solution is to separate them in two rooms. I hope this helped you! Regards, Ajith.

yea it's in their personality. Some of them are just destined to be that way. It's like forcing brussel sprouts on a chocoholic. Do you think he's going to eat them? Answer is no. Your never going to get oscar the grouch out of his trash can if you know what i mean. The best thing to do is just phase it in slowly bring the cat maybe in for only a day the first week 2 days the second week on so on untill your cat doesn't mind the other one being there. But if your cat is the way he is even that might not work. :S. Maybe go to a vet and see what she thinks? Well good luck with your cat problems, hope they work out.
