Do you think that taking air flight is safe?

Have you heard of the recent airplane being struck down by the lightening? Do you have any bad experience taking air flight? I hate turbulance but read that turbulance would not bring down an airplane. Why then are there frequent reports of plane crashes? You have any 'horror' stories to share?
