No dowary is not a need. But this should be abolished. This can be achieved only when females make up their mind to get all rights as men gets i.e. all men & women gets equal rights in property of parents according to law but women always give up their part to their brothers. If women starts taking their right in property, there will be no need of dowery, because this part will normally be much more then dowery. So now its in the hands of women to either to stop or go with the dowery.

i think that depends on what culture or society your a part of. I dont think dowries have ever been practiced in canada not even buy the original settlers although perhaps by the native indians here and mayby among close knit communities with immigrants who are still marrying strictly withing their culture, if you are wanting to know if its still important in a certain country just make a comment saying the country and people will be able to respond to your question better
