I wouldn't allow my children to watch a Spongebob cartoon if it were the only show on every single TV station! It is one of the stupidest TV shows, and I honestly feel like watching it is making my IQ drop!
What do you think of Spongebob?
Can you name a cartoon geared for children that is stupider than Spongebob?
What cartoon (geared for children) do you absolutely refuse to allow your children to watch?

I think I like to watch Spongebob since it's so funny. I know it's stupid, but I don't consider it seriously because I realize that Spongebob is created to entertain its beholders & to make them laugh at. I don't have children yet because I'm still single. But I think if I had children, I would allow them to watch it. They better to watch Spongebob instead of watching adult movies or other TV programs that are inappropriate for them.

So do I. I agree with you and highly recommend this cartoon for kids with parental guidance.

Wow I think this is the first thing we don't have in common. lol. I actually don't mind sponge bob. It is kind of stupid sometimes but I think that is what makes it funny. It lets kids be kids and just laugh at something stupid instead of trying to teach them spanish or japanese. There are even some that I laugh at when I see it. Other than the fact it really doesn't teach kids anything, I find it pretty harmless.

I don't exactly agree with shows trying to teach them 2nd languages either, but I do honestly think Spongebob teaches kids that it's okay to be stupid and annoying. I just want to reach into the TV and slap the characters.
I guess for older kids it's okay, but I don't think it's for children under the age of 8. There are other shows on TV that allow kids to be kids without being stupid!

I'll be nice.
When my son was little he watched Little Bear, Rupert and Gullah Gullah Island. My granddaughter watched Maisy and Bob the Builder. Honestly, I'm glad to have more programming for children other than just what is on public television.

I remember some of those. My oldest son and my siblings used to watch those shows. Most of them were educational though, unlike Spongebob.

As the mom of a couple preschoolers, I'd take Barney over Spongebob anyday.

I'm with ya, I find it stupid AND incredibly creepy. I sort of get how little kids could enjoy it but what I don't get is when teens and adults have a thing for Spongebob. The only thing that comes to mind that was as annoying and creepy is the Teletubbies. Those things freaked me out.

The Teletubbies weren't just freaky, they were relentless.. those stupid videos they showed that made me want to fall asleep, and when it was finally over "AGAIN!!" OMG! NOOOOOOOO

I agree with you I can't stand Spongebob. My 3 year old granddaughter use to watch it some times but I think she is so smart that she doesn't want to watch it anymore. She usually likes to watch Dora the Explorer, Backyardigans or Tom and Jerry. My daughter did not want my granddaughter to watch Dora the Explorer because she didn't like her for some unknown reason. However, my granddaughter kept asking to watch it and she gave in. I think its a cute show which teaches alot to the kids. As for the stupidest it has to be Spongebob without a doubt because I can't think of another one that could take the prize. LOL LOL LOL

I wasn't crazy about Dora either. I'm not bilingual, I don't believe in being bilingual unless you have strong ties to your heritage, which I do not. I want my children to be American first, and if they so choose they can learn other languages later in life. I thought it would be horribly confusing to teach my children Spanish before they completely learned English. So that's why I didn't agree with Dora. It should be the parent's choice to teach their child another language, not a cartoon character's choice.

There is nothing Un-American about exposing children to secondary languages when they are young REGUARDLESS of there heritage. In fact America is a melting pot of all different races, creeds, colors, and nationalities. All pediatric scientists and educators will tell you that the first few years of your childs life there brain is like a sponge... not litterally but figureatively. They soak up everything! From that point on they continue to level off fairly quickly at the ease of learning. That is to say the learning takes more effort... actual study... pratice... memorization etc. What you SHOULD be peaved about is that Spanish seems to be the only language they want to expose your child too at a young age... not the fact that the foundation of a secondary language is being laid. Your lack of choices should be the concern! Why is there no exposure to French? German? Russian? etc. I suppose in there defence... Spanish is supposed to be one of the easiest secondary languages to learn so maybe its easier for the child to learn it. I suppose if you want to you could rail on about the fact it's that we have too many immigrants (legal or not) from Spanish speaking countries like Cuba, Hati, and Mexico. That may be a valid argument... but it's not really all that relevant to your child's education. Don't think so? I can give you an example through my own personal experience.
In high school I had to take Spanish, French, or Latin as a second language to get a college prepatory diploma. I failed my second semester of Spanish in my first year. You have to pass TWO years of one of those languages to pass. I studied pretty hard in that class but just could not grasp the language in the short amount of time in a semester. if I had a stronger foundation as a child in Spanish... or French... (I just can't see Latin as a viable language to try to teach a child).. then who knows I might have BREEZED through it. My point is this.. don't limit your child's education because of your on short sightedness... You can be American an expose and educate your child about other cultures and languages without taking any of the "American" out of them. If you are that strongly opposed to Spanish... then take it upon yourself and expose them to French... or maybe something that IS in your heritage. I can promise you this... they will be exposed to it in one way or another.... all be it in high school.... and probably even college.
Just my thoughts....

Oh gosh, I forgot about all those Cartoon Network shows. See, I outlawed that channel in my house, unless me or hubby put it on that channel, which sometimes we did for Boomerang. They used to show Scooby Doo and a bunch of other cartoons we grew up watching. We'd sit and watch it with the kids. But the kids were never allowed to put it on that channel. They only knew 71 (Disney). I didn't even allow them to put it on Nick, that would be another one I'd choose.

I once sat with my daughter and watched about 4 hours of the Nick channel cartoons. I found Spongebob to be one of the more entertaining ones of the bunch, so you can imagine how awful the others were! In particular "The Mighty B", "Tak and Power of JuJu" and "Danny Phantom", etc etc. I only wonder who in the world comes up with these characters!

I agree with you, when one wants her kids to have educational knowledge, she shouldn't allow her kids to watch spongebob. But even when he's stupid, I still watch it and my kids also like him. At first, I really hate him but since I'm used to seeing his show since my kids watch him, I came to like him. The Tom and Jerry show is also one show that I really don't like that much, coz it always focuses on the violence between Tom and Jerry. My kids also watches the show but I tell them that if there is another option, it's better that they watch the other show.

I completely detest spongebob and I have a list of no-no's and acceptible shows for my family should I ever have children. I am not convinced that spongebob is in fact for children. Like many shows today animated doesn't equal age appropriate.

I LOATHE SBSP... I'm like you I feel dumber even THINKING about watching his show.
I can think of another one though... Cayou... I know this is a PBS show... but I hate it! To me it give kids the impression that if they are whiny and complain a lot they get what they want!!!! There's already TOO much of that already!
If you've got tweenies... KEEP THEM AWAY FROM THE DISNEY CHANNEL! The DC is HORRIBLE in my opinion. It over exposes and hyper-exposes them to commercialism and idolism. How many tweenie and early teen girls do you know that want to be like Hannah Montana... Lizzie MaGuire etc etc... How many of them want to dress like them? Talk like them? Shows should NOT influence children like that... I don't care how much friggin money they can make off of it!

I am irritated with Spongebob's voice. Its like pinching your nose and going high pitch! Haha! But that cartoon is cute with lots of humor poured into it. Don't be too harsh on that show katsmeow1213 hehe. There are good cartoons for children like dora the explorer, blues clues, etc. So let your children watch those if you do not want Spongebob.

I don't like the show. I don't let my daughter watch it. From an educational standpoint, I think it really stinks. I agree with you on the IQ thing. THere are many much better programs on.

Spongebob has to be the worst cartoon ever. Of course, I also remember Cat-Dog. It was pretty bad, too. To tell you the truth, I don't like most of the cartoons on Nickelodeon. Disney has some pretty good children's programs. They are geared towards learning. But Nick? They just want to make our children dumb, I think.

I read and found out about some businessmen and creative people that they actually watch cartoons to make them think out of the box. To release their inner creativity and turn it into opportunities. I realise that most entrepreneurs and business people, mostly think illogical or different which creates new products. Television was once thought to be a joke and impossible. Who would have thought an Iphone would become reality in those ancient times!?
I feel that no matter what kind of shows one watches, or different kind of jobs or learning experienced, opportunities are there. Or maybe I can say it's everywhere. It's whether you have the idea, mindset and observation to realise them.
Be Enlightened! Cheers!

hi there, well i have to agree with you too. I dont really like spongebob too. I mean infact he actually loks abit freaky to an extent. Well but it really is quite strange to notice some children actually really hook on to him. well furthermore i have also seen adults who actually cant get enough of him. Well i actually know of a friend who actually bought his cartoons online from ebay. She actually bought the whole entire set it seems. after that she actually took off from work and sat down the whole day happily watching it. I really cant believe that people actually are crazy about him. Leave the childrens alone. These are adults as well that we are talking about. its rather interesting. I am sure you guys know of a few adults as well. anyway have a good day ahead and happy mylotting.
best regards,
alvingb
