Do you have sales people come to your house and...

sell your stuff regularly? There were two teenagers came to my house and were trying to sell magazines last week. My hubby answered the sdoor and he told me that was weird, first of all, they didn't seem like a real salesman, second, if they were, they don'tusually give up so easy, third, their dress up was so not fit to be a salesman like tie + short but workboots? So we went to the police and made a record, police told us they did receive similar calls about it so I'm highly concerned about it right now... that's why I never open door to strangers and I was so glad that my hubby was home that day, otherwise, I would not know what to do... Do you have story like this to share?

In your case it could have just been some teens selling them for school. When I was in school we had to sell magazines for certain athletic programs. I usually don't get many knocks on my door, but the community we live in is strictly no soliciting. We've gotten a few. I'll buy candy from the kids or cookies from the girlscouts when they come through. I usually don't answer for adult strangers though.

I had to sell magazines and candy in school. I agree with you charity. Last year I bought a whole bunch of popcorn from some pretty poorly represented cub scouts. I always answer for adult strangers as you will see in my response below.

We have had an insurance lady come to the house, she was looking for the previous home owners, but still tried to sell us insurance. I thought that it was a little odd. We live in a neighbourhood with lots of school aged children, so when it is fundraising time at school, or for sports teams we get quite a few kids selling chocolate bars, raffle tickets and sometimes magazine subscriptions. The kids coming to our door doesn't bother me at all and we usually buy from them.

I would probably just shut her down and say we have insurance already and make her go away... I just don't like to socialize with the sales people if I don't interested at all, it might be a little rude but save her time! Thanks for sharing! :-)

I did tell her that I already had insurance and she left. I try not to be rude to them because after all they are just doing their job ( no matter how annoying it may be to some). I can sympathize with them. My daughter is in Girl Guides and I am her leader. Sometimes the other girls will bring back cookies that they were not able to sell. We cannot return them, so my daughter and I sometimes have to go door to door in our neighbourhood to get rid of them. Most people are polite if they don't want to buy some, but to me there is no reason to be rude. Just say no thanks, or if you really don't want to be bothered just don't answer the door.

I have never encountered such a scary incidents. But I am not taking chances. My iron grill is always locked and this deter any intruder coming in unannounced. We should never allow unfamiliar people coming in to our house to avoid problems. I have heard of many cases of impersonation and people get robbed in broad daylight. Be very careful next time.

It might have been for a school fundraiser, im all for schools having more money but I don't have money to give them lol, so I have lots of stories of kids trying to sell me cookies at like $10 for a box of cookies, or the most ridiculous was $6 for a bead! it was a tiny hand painted bead and they wanted $6 for one bead,,,,,once i told them "no im sorry i can't, i can give you a couple of dollars just for your cause but i cant pay that much for what youre selling" they got an attitude and wouldn't back down, the worst was when a little 3rd grade girl called me stupid for "not seeing a deal",,,and would not stop trying to get me to buy the cookies, just like some cheap used car salesman,,god i had to bite my tongue not to go off on the brat

I don't know, after I heard couples of mylotters told me their stories, they could have been some school fundraiser but that was the first time I experienced it so I was just concerned. Thanks for sharing! :-)

I have a firm and fast rule: I do not open the door, no matter who you are, unless you have telephoned first. I figure, if you took the time to drop by, then were your fingers broken and unable to dial a phone to let me know of your intentions? Afterall, perhaps my life might be a little busy? LOL As for what happened to you mermaidivy, WOW. Creepy. You did the right thing by reporting the incident. The tactic of going to a person's door under some pretense for nefarious reasons, goes back to ancient times. It is no wonder that in modern society we have long abandoned the rules of hospitality towards strangers.

We RARELY have people come door-to-door; but on the rare occasions that they do, it's usually selling steaks (and if I decide to answer the door, I tell them that I'm a vegetarian), and if they're selling ice cream - Schwans (I'll tell them that I don't eat dairy, lactose intolerant), and anything else - and I'll say I'm just not interested. I usually don't even answer the front door - because everyone I know would go around to the back door anyway. I probably wouldn't call the cops about it, though. I mean - just because they're "unlikely" salespeople - it doesn't necessarily mean that they were out scamming them just because they don't fit the mold of a normal salesman or saleslady. But that's just my opinion.

Nothing so scary happened to me ever but this is becoming a regular threat to people who stay alone throughout the day. In our local newspapers, I have come across such incidents where criminals in the garb of salesperson go out in the afternoon. They choose that particular time coz the men are at office and the kids are at school or college so the women are in all probability alone at home. The criminals offer to sell anything from dry packaged food, to snacks to clothes and household knickknacks. If any unsuspecting housewife opens her door to them, she is doomed. These crooks usually carry arms in their huge bags under the goods they are pretending to sell, they just barge in and loot the house….in some cases, they don’t stop to murder, too!

i actually haven't seen door-to-door solicitors in my neighborhood for a long time. about the only ones who come by anymore are the jehovah's witnesses, and i told them they are not welcome here. 2 that came by one day made my mom cry,and they are so lucky no one answered the phone at kingdom hall.i would have went off on them.

Hello mermaidivy, It never happened to me before. I used to get people who come to my house, selling stuff and get angry for no reasons when the answer is a big NO. Sometimes I feel that these people are not selling their stuff but forcing others to buy whatever they sell. One time, a boy claimed to be a college student came to my house trying to sell calendars with hand made prints. His reason was that he's trying to find additional income to cover his expenses while on semester break. Parents are poor people and can't depend on them. I felt pity and decided to give him some money but he didn't want to accept but forcing me to buy the stuff that he sells. I told him I don't need a calendar and in a good gesture telling him to accept the money as I was sincere to help him. He got irritated and started saying harsh words to me. I told him one last time that I didn't want to buy and if he still insist on me, he could go to somewhere else. He ended the conversation by telling me how selfish I were for not helping him by buying cheap stuff from him!

I don't deal with door to door sales...ever. Some of them are probably legit but so many are not. I have dealt with guys hitting on me and guys wanting to just party. I just say "no thanks" ...end of conversation.

We get college kids from time to time trying to pedal magazines here as well. I hear lots of bad things about those places recrutiting kids to pretty much camp out their whole summer and get next to nothing in return for their sales ect. I just plain don't answer the door! Since I have an obvious fixer upper we do get folks from time to time wanting us to replace our windows & siding.... *sigh* Undoubtivly it needs to get done but if we could skip on paying other bills for a year or two we'd have the money easily but it's obvious to me we need these things and when we're able it'll get done. The hard part is sometimes the kids want to fling the door open when they hear a knock. But if I don't expect anyone, I'm not answering unless I recognize the vehicle or person I won't deal with any salesmen or religious group that comes to the door pestering.

well not necessarily salesmen or women for that matter but we have had on occasion have the (modern day) jehovah's witnesses come door to door asking to help support their cause with a donation or perhaps a sign up for a book on the Jehovah's witnesses something like that but... to be disturbed from whatever you were doing at home to answer the door to some teens trying to pretend to be salesmen is quite odd at least the Jehovah's witnesses are a legitimate organization the teens could have been canvassing as salesmen only to catch any homeowner who answered the door off guard in order to rob their homes if you need to take further action against problems like these I wonder if installing one of those peepholes found on doors in hotels and motels and some sort of inexpensive wall mount 2 way intercom to greet visitors from within your home that way you can see if it is someone you recognize and tell them you will let them in otherwise if it is someone you do not know you can tell them to leave the premises without having to actually open the door Better to be safe then sorry

I like to let them in. Then tell them that I have to finish something up and go put on a weird animal costume, giant head or a dress (i'm a boy and it shocking when unexpected). I really like it when I have someone else around that can join in the fun. So far my favorite has been my buddy and I with a couple of mormon salesmen trying to sell religion to me. I dressed up as Homosexual Hare the gay transexual rabbit and my buddy dressed up as my husband, Clevus the cantankerous hillbilly. We had seen them heading towards the door and were already in costume and character when we opened the door. It was great!

we have had ADT and Pinnacle companies come through recently. we just bought our house in november and suddenly because one person gets the system in the neighbor hood they think we ought to have enough money to put one in. The system itself was free but you'd still have to pay for the monthly monitoring. I never let people like that in the house. we didn't have that problem before because we lived in an apartment and then before that our house was miles from normal civilazation. anyways, I don't pay the bills so usually that works unless they see both cars are outside then they know more than one is there. Anyways, he didn't force himself or anything but that does sound suspicious and it's a good thing. you're better off to be safe than to be sorry and something happen to your or to your home. I've looked at sales as an option for a job outlet and the more i think about it the more it turns me off from doing it. this one job was selling knives and although it was a reputable company you had to pay for the kit you used to get started with and you only got paid if you got a lead. This involves doing demonstrations in peoples homes and as uncomfortable as I am with having someone come in I just didn't think I could make it as an outside sales person. If I had the leads that might be different. But having to create your own leads for you to make money. it just seemed kind of shady. anyways, i hope you all figure out what is going on.

Yea, better to be safe that's why we went to the police station and make a record just in case and they say we can just call 911 if they come again and we suspicious anything could happen. That was the first time I came across those thing since I used to live in a big city. Thanks for sharing your story! :-)
