Over the counter pills

I've always had trouble sleeping... plenty of nights, it works out all right, but sometimes I lie in bed for hours, and just can't get to sleep. So, recently, I've been taking allergy pills (50mg Diphenhydramine Hydrochloride), and once it's been about a half hour to an hour since I took one pill, I get really sleepy, and having a full night's rest is easy.
So, the question is, is that a good thing, or a bad thing?

I don't like to take pills. When i cannot sleep I usually do this little trick, I keep my eyes half closed but not completely closed. After a while they get tired and I am in slumberland very quickly. Cheers!!

I guess I kind of end up doing that when I'm watching a TV show on my laptop in bed... it does seem to work out, then after the show is done, and nothing happens on my computer for about 10 minutes, it shuts itself off. I just find that sometimes I have enough interest in the show that I'm still wide awake... I'll try the way you speak of more, though.

I actually do the same thing you do. If i don't take benedryl before i lie down in bed i can lay there for hours and never fall asleep but i can get tired but never be able to sleep and it is really annoying and i can't just not go to sleep because the next day i will be exhausted like a zombie trying to do work and what not. Taking an allergy pill helps me sleep till about 5 in the morning and then i can usually head back to bed after i wake up for a few more hours and it helps because if i didn't have that it would be a nightmare and i find nothing wrong with it at all i think not being able to sleep at night is normal and so many people are like that so i wouldn't worry about a thing.

Phew, I'm glad I'm not the only one doing it. For how long have you been taking them? I try not to have them unless I've already been in bed for a while and can't sleep, or just know that sleeping is going to be tough if I don't have them... I get to bed late, too, what most people would call "early morning", so lying in bed and seeing the sun come up is just awful.
Also, how many do you take? Is it 25 or 50mg pills? Have you had any side effects from them? Thanks a bunch!

I would say that if your doctor is cool with it, its not a bad thing! At least you can sleep easier! I have issues sleeping too and started taking Tylenol PM when needed....it does tend to help! I know how it sucks to not be able to sleep, you are willing to take anything just for rest. Good luck with taking the pills, I hope it continues to help you!
