Cat owners...does it seem like your cat is watching something that isn't there?

I have had many cats while growing up and right now I have 3 wonderful cats that live with me. I have noticed that my cats will sometimes appear to be watching something. Their eyes will look like they are following something around the room but when I look in the direction that they are looking, I don't see anything. Sometimes it is a bug or something like that they are watching, but other times...nothing.
Do your cats ever seem to be watching something that you can't see?
What do you think they're doing?
maybe seeing ghosts...lol :)

I am a firm believer that cats are very much connected to spirits, I think they can see things we don't very much like what I also believe some elderly people in nursing Homes see, they sometimes have the same look. I know exactly what you are talking about...it is a very well accepted thing that animals of all sorts have a sense that we are not aware of probably because we have been conditioned over hundreds of years to believe something else.

Yes, yes, very often. Even if I am cuddling them, and they are purring back, but then look up over my shoulder, eyes may widen, and they stare, definitely looking at something. (I do make it obvious, hee hee, to show how I wonder or am impressed with their advanced hearing and vision compared to me!) I follow their eyes and keep trying to turn to look wherever they are looking. My eyesight and smell is only a fraction of their's in ability, I'm sure. I am sure that they see and or hear little footsteps or noices or see little creature/bugs crawling around, or they hear and/or feel a little shake of the ground, or see/hear a faint bird from outside the window.

Yeah, sometimes they do. I think they are scoping the ceiling for bugs. I have seen tiny white colored baby spiders when i look to see what they are looking at. You know how sometimes in a ray of sunlight you can see dust? One of my cats likes to try and play with that. They have very sensitive eyes and ears. They can see tiny microscopic things we can not. I read that they can hear a mouse walking inside of a wall.

Yes, one of my cats does that. Just like you, I look in the direction she's looking, but see nothing. It makes one very curious.

My cats do that all the time, too! lol
At first it freaked me out, too, but now I got used to it. I think there may be some very small bugs that we can't see but they might notice them better... That's the logical explanation...
But I always believed animals can see things we can't see, like spirits or ghosts. It sounds scary but I really think it's true. Sometimes they just stare without doing anything so I doubt there are any bugs, or else they'd jump on them.
But sometimes something really freaky happens... (and that's why I started thinking cats can really see spirits!) they stare for a while in a certain direction and then they look really scared! Honestly it freaked me out at first! They backed out a bit looking very scared, but when I looked in the direction they are looking I can't see anything! 0_0 How can they be scared of nothing? It's obvious there is some sort of spirit or something we can't see there, or else my cats would not have acted that way.

hi there anonymousb, i've got three wonderful cats at home too. i've seen that intense look on their face countless times. they'll be staring at a blank wall for quite a long time. it's more scary when they stare at the blank wall behind me. some times the hair on my neck stands because i'm not too sure what they see exactly. most times i tell myself it's a bug or a fly that is too small for my eyes to see. the one time that i got freaked out was when my girl stared at the wall behind me. her pupils dilate and her jaw dropped. it's not the open-mouth thing when they do the jacob's gland thing, more like jaw-dropped-coz-it's-so-scary kind.

Children and animals converse with angels. :) I don't believe in ghosts categorically; I believe there are spiritual entities, both good and bad, that people (and animals) with more innocence and more open minds can see, feel, and/or talk to. Which is very cool. You get a dog for a physical bodyguard, and a cat for a spiritual one. :D

I once had this cat that always loved to watch for flying moths, she was always watching out for something. One night while I was laying on the sofa watching T.V. I noticed she was watching something close to the hallway area. She was sitting on the arm rest on the sofa I was laying on, My head was laying on a toss pillow next to the arm rest she was sitting on, she was looking over her shoulder fixated on something very intensely and I couldn't see what she was looking at from my point of view . I called her name to get her attention and she wouldn't look at me at all which I found unusual because she would always look at me every time I would call her name, but this time she didn't even flinch or move because whatever she was looking at had her gaze. I decided to sit up and take a look at whatever she was watching. Maybe a bug on the wall? Well as soon as I lifted my head up and looked toward the hallway area I saw something you or anyone else here may or may not believe. I saw a 6ft whitish-gray shadow human form apparition- a ghost of some sort, it didn't have a defined face or anything like that, just a blurry human body form .. But as soon as I looked at it, the thing took off down the hallway and me and my cat both jumped up like lightning. I was so in awe of what I saw that I actually went after it and flipped on the hall light to see if I could see where it went..LOL..
This happened many years ago at this old apartment I use to live in. It was the first time I ever seen anything like this before in my life. True story.

For one, we do not own our cats, they own us!! Haven't you noticed that?? They get us to feed them, play with them ect ... As for watching things, the things whether they are bugs, dust flying, or cobwebs, they DO see it. It is there. It is just to small for us to see it till we get up close. My cat does this all the time, and I cant see what he does till I get up close. They have such a strong sense in their eyesight it is 20 times better than ours. This is true.

Animals are very sensitive to atmospheres and they are probably seeing the spirit of someone/soemthing that lived there before

It shows that they are totally focused on targetting their prey. No amount of distraction will affect them. There is a lesson for all of us, get focused on our mission, success is ours.

My cat acts strange quite a bit. Sometimes I do think she's watching something that I can't see but then, if I really pay attention and watch very closely, I've noticed she's watching bugs like flies and moths. And, if she gets a nice hold on it, she'll chase it around the house.
Now, there is a theory that pets can see ghosts but I'm pretty sure my cat isn't seeing ghosts.

I think all cats do it. My daughter's cat can often be found staring off into one of the upper corners of the room. He tends to flinch suddenly and dart off as well like whatever it was that he saw scared him a bit.
I'm not sure if it's ghosts or not but I'm pretty sure that there is actually something there that we just can't see.

well, yes, it does seemt that cats can see what we can't
I've read a couple of SF stories where they do just that too! The things are too small, too fast, or just outside our range of vision but the cats can see them. Good stories...
So, anyway, yeah, they do seem to be watching something we can't see, and yeah, sometimes they might be ghosts...

I have most often found that they are watching very little bugs and I have to get really close to see them. Sometimes the cats are watching light flickers on the wall. Usually I have to get close to the cat to see what it is. I notice that they also stay very aware of where the other cats in the house are at all times too. We have three cats also.

Wow quite interesting if i do say so myself. Sadly i wouldnt know because im severely allergic to cats :( . I do wish sometimes i wasnt because some cats really do look adorable and playful. I however do not believe that cats are looking at any exact thing persay. Just like all of us, cats can daydream i believe. Could it not be possible that your cats are merely just day dreaming or maybe even lost in thoughts of their own. Heres something interesting though. Do you know that cats have 32 muscles in each ear? Moreover it has been tested by scientists that animals can detect things before they happen. For example earthquakes, natural disastors and in some odd cases siezures. Could it be that these heightened senses are what cause cats to daze off as they can see something coming that we cant?
