One of the worst habits i have and am not really appreciated of is nail biting! I wonder i was born that way - LOL. I remember my parents and grandparents telling me not to bite my nails from my early teens. I did try many ways to get rid of this ahbi - i applied nail polish and then will distract my self or try to avoid looking at my nails. It worked for a whole, but oflate i have indulged myself into this bad habit again!
I think it is due to stress. When ever i feel stress i love chewing my nais and fingers, not to mention the "ewe" stars from people :)
Have you anytime tried to put a stop to any of your bad habits? Do share ...

Yes, I have, sometimes with success and sometimes not. I have an adult friend who bites her nails, quits for a while, but goes back to the habit. Have you tried wearing gloves as a reminder not to bite? Sometimes, we do these things without even being consciously aware of it at times. Since it most likely is related to stress, try each time you find yourself biting your nails to do something else instead. Chew on a pencil?? : )
Best of luck to you with this.

I read the great advice of the person who suggested some of the B vitamins. I have a deficiency in those, and they sell a B Complex 100 that has all the B vitamins in one tablet...a blessing and a bit of savings on the cost.

I bit my nails my whole life until I was about 22. One day I decided that having beautiful nails and pretty hands was more important. I got a good nail file and kept it with me all the time to take care of anything I'd be tempted to bite off (which makes them peel worse). It's going to take a couple of months, and the mental strength to use the file instead of your teeth.
I've had great nails for 21 years now, and I really love how I feel when I look at my hands. A few years back I got acrylic put on them and I am HOOKED! Polish stays on forever!!!and they don't break or peel! Being able to wear any color polish I want and have beautiful hands is so fabulous.
Just say no to biting. No bad-tasting stuff is going to make a difference. Your nails will get stronger as they grow. Get a file and keep it with you at all times. Eat Jello or take gelatin, and keep any kind of polish on them. Redo it when it chips. With practice you will become a pro at painting your own nails. That's one thing that may keep you from biting, so you don't wreck the pretty polish. It will all be worth it.

Hey Divkris, nice to know that even you have this bad habit.
Even my wife has the same bad habit....and lemme tell you it took me a very long time to make her leave this...but finally i succedded.
Whenever she used to bite nails, i would remind her that the next time you eat your nails, i will make sure to cut my nails and put it in your dinner plate. Since you like nails so much , you can mine as well....
That would simply make her feel disgusting and finally she left the habit...hurray !!!!!!
Talikg about a bad habit that i have, i get angry very
Do let me know what efforts you have taken to stop this habit of yours...
I can keep them handy in case if my wife starts it over again....
hahahahahahahahahaha

LOL - i think you wife should have had a tough time fighting nail biting, especially with you around. I liked the way you supported her to overcome her problem :). Spouses/partners can be a great deal of help when it comes to matters like these and in case of stress.
Well, if you need some help with controlling your anger then you should try some of the anger management tips. Try the pillow fight, where you imagine the pillow top be the person you are angry with and hit it. But i don't like being violent over these so the most natural and quick way of reducing your temper is to take 10 deep breathings and you will be surprised that you are cool by the time are inhaling the 10th time :)

Nail biting is a nervous habit, it is not that you look at your nails and think "Tasty! and with a little barbaque sauce and a side they make a great meal!" No that is not the problem that is why trying to not focus on your nails and hands will not work. Nor does the taste of that nail polish that you are talking about. People get used to the flavor quickly. I was a nail biter when I was a child and I can name you a cure for nail biting that will work if you are a girl. Which for some reason I infer that you are. Go out and have your nails done over in acrylic tips. Don't just have them polished go whole hog on the full set of nails. You're going to have to buy glue and some grooming tools for these nails also because if they pop off any exposed nail is toast! So you want to immediately put it back on. Wear them as long as you can stand to wear them and rather than trying not to focus on your hands and nails, Do the opposite, look at them often and tell yourself how much nicer your nails and hands look with the unbitten pretty new nails on. Over time your desire to chew your nails will go asway even when you're not wearing nails. However in order to reprogram your Obsessive compulsion to chew your nails it may take as long as a year of doing this before you realize that you no longer chew your nails even when they are exposed. For an adult or young adult nail biting is the equivalent of thumb sucking. Probably because you were a voracious thumb sucker as a young child and were forced to give up the thumb before you were ready to. maybe not but I hear that that is one of the more common threads for nail biters.

Hi Sharone, i like the way you see the nail biting problem in a differnt perspective. But, i was never a thumb sucker as a child but i have this constant stress which i'm not able to tell my dear ones. I do like your idea of admiring the nails that pulling off your attention from them! :)
For your smoking habit, have you tried chewing gums when ever you feel like smoking. It is a good exercise for your jaw and is less harmful than smoking itself, isn't it. But make sure you don't fall addicted to chewing gums. :)

I usually fall back into the same bad habits after the first week of trying. The only way to curb my bad habits was to create a new habit. New habits don't necessarily have to be bad ones. For example, I stopped drinking Pepsi and other caffeinated beverages and replaced it with 100% fruit juice, milk, and tea. I hardly ever touch soda anymore. You don't understand how much caffeine and sugar effects your body until you're off the stuff. Things like chewing your finger nails is tougher to stop because it's like a nervous pulse. You don't even know you're doing it most of the time.

Oh! yes. I was once addicted to these carbonated drinks and i found that i was growing weaker day by day. I had frequent stomach upsets and my whole system had a topsy-turvy. Now i have limited my number of drinks but often feel guilty as soon as i empty a bottle :(

I wrestled with biting my nails for most of my life. I have tried all the things you have tried. About six months ago I had an interesting talk with, of all people, my dentist. We talked about different habits and he could see that my teeth were being worn down in the front. He asked if I bit my nails. All he had to do is look at my hands. I asked him if he knew of any reasons why people bite their nails. His reply was that he thought it was for the same reason that kids sometimes eat dirt. They are looking for a nutrient that their body needs. He asked me if I was chewing on the nail once I bit it off. I thought for a moment and realized that I was. He suggested that I search the internet for some articles on what nutrients may be missing when you bite your nails. I do not remember which web site gave me this information but one of them suggested that it might be a biotin (one of the B vitamins?) deficiency.
For the past three months I have been taking biotin (1000 mcg.) from Solaray each day. I also take a Mega B-Stress by Solaray from time to time. Over this time I have lost my need to bite my nails and they are actually growing. They are also healthier than they ever have been. I have ridges in my nails also that the doctor says is due to an iodine deficiency. I am working on that also. The doctor says white spots are due to a zinc deficiency and I am also working on that. I have heard that when one is under stress, the B vitamins are burned out of the body. They are also burned out of the body if the diet is too heavy in the white foods like sugar, white flour, white rice, white bread, etc. My nail biting began in the first grade when I struggled to learn to read. Back in that time people did not know about dyslexia and I struggled until I was in my 40's before being diagnosed with that. Now I have gone through vision therapy (eye muscle strengthening exercises) and the dyslexia is cleared up. With the help of the extra nutrients, I feel better than I ever have in my life.
I wish you well in this. I have hated being stuck with this habit for so long and am glad that it is finally resolving.

It has been a blessing to go through the dyslexia and to now have come out of it. So many can be helped by something called vision therapy. Many people do not know about it but it has brought four people in our family out of this problem. God bless your aunt for what she does and I wish you the best is being set free.

I know all about nail biting. I have broke myself from it 95% of the time unless I am really really mad or worried then I will out of habit chew on a few. I don't like chewing my nails because it makes my hands look unattractive I can't wear nail polish when they are stubs so I broke myself 95% of the habit that I have had since I was about 6 years old. My little sister has the nail biting problem also and I have been trying to get her to stop by promising her nail polish but so far not working as well as I had hoped.

Yeah, tell me about it! I mean, everyone has a bad habit. I used to be a nail biter when I was a kid, but as I grow up, the habit's gone. Even it's coming back sometimes, but it's not irritating anymore. Well, I forgot how the habit's gone. But I think that you can get another habit. Just try distract yourself from biting nails. Believe this: Where there's a will, there's a way.

I second the motion to you, I also have a bad habit of biting my nails too. I really wanna stop biting my nails because I was really ashame when people will look into my hands then my nails are so little. Same as you, I had tried so many ways of not biting my nails like putting some nail polis, sometime band-aids so that I can't really bite but it works for a couple of days then it started again. I also don't know how to stop it. Same reasons why I bite my nails its because of stress or when there is something I feel not good. I express my emotions through biting my nails and I know it isn't really good. I just hope that we can stop this bad habits that we have someday.

I am a comfort eater by nature, and although I always prepare healthy meals, I love potato crisps. In England, it wasn't so bad, because the bags were small, and I never kept them in the house - I just bought a packet occasionally when I was out shopping or in a bar.
Here in Spain, the packets are huge - 200grams - and they are so much nicer than in England. Because we have a lot of friends dropping in for drinks and nibbles, I persuaded myself I needed to keep crisps in the house to be a good host. Needless to say, I finished up eating them! Now I only buy one packet of crisps each week, and if we don't have visitors, I try to leave them unopened for as long as possible.
I keep a dish of olives on the breakfast bar, and if I get the urge to open the crisps, I have a handful of olives instead. I know that once the bag of crisps is open, I won't rest until it's empty!

I always had it but to my failure, I did not make any difference. Though I had to make it a little bit more for self discipline to get control and would lately get rid of it. I just don't have that self discipline sometimes that is why I never had the chance to over come it.

Don't worry... you aren't alone with nail bitting's habbit. My teacher have the same problem. She is 53 years old and still bite her nail when getting stress. My younger friend have the same habit, but its gone when he grow up. Try to put something on your nail. You can put balm or oil especially when you are stress, and try to do any activities using your finger. You want to stop now? Take action!

WEll I consider nail biters have it easier. I pick my nails. I feel I could easily stop a biting nail habit but how do you prevent your urge to pick at a nail. The longest I went without picking my nails I believe was a week or two. It is the hardest habit to quit. And I believe I picked it up from my father. I use to see him do it alot when I was young and suddenly I just started doing it.
