Have a Nice day?

One of those greetings that we use and hear everyday. Should this greeting interprete as well wish or so forth? The minute someone greet me with this words I would be feeling positively on that moment. What should be actual definition of this greeting?

It should be a positive thing.. but it is not always... do you really think that every cashier that you encounter... actually cares if you have a nice day?... nope.. its just something they have to say to make the store seem nicer... or.. have you not ever said.. Have a nice day.. when someone has been harsh with you...?... nope your not wishing they have a nice day, its an in your face, I am nicer than you are. but... I wish people would only use the expression when they ment it.
