Many people all over the world like to work via the internet and computers. This may be a good thing, a lot less stress from other colleagues and your boss, more comfortable working conditions (some research shows that this makes work more productive), and less fuel wasted going to and from.
However...
Working from via the internet can reduce social skills and also limit learning capabilities from experiences at work. Some jobs just plain can't be worked at home or via the internet.
But the Question is if you had the choice, which would you choose and why?
I look forward to your answers and opinions :D

Hi mitobid, thats really a nice discussion topic.
My organisation has provided me with the facility to work from home as well from office. I prefer doing both, bcoz both has its advantages and disadvantages.
Working from home gives me the pleasure of doing things at my own pace and also as i wish.
On the other hand working while i m working in office, i know that i am being looked over my boss, who would really not like if i keep on surfing the internet and doing my work at a slow pace.
But, while i m working in office, i need not have to make breakfast, lunch or dinner which is readily available. Also while working from home, the internet connection sometimes gets disrupted in between and i need to keep on connecting back.
So both has its advantages and disadvantages.
What are your thoughts on this??

I Think that its great that you have the facilites to do this, it must be great to be able to work from home aswell as at work. I agree that they both have advantages and disadvantages and dont even talk about the internet connection, been through that tonnes of times. Some days you just plain dont feel like going to work, and working at home is the perfect solution. I think its great to hear from someone with the capabilities and experience.

of course, I prefer to work at home. It's really hard to wake up in the morning and getting ready in a short moment of time to work. and sometimes i had to commute rather than use my car due to traffic and some annoying drivers who thinks that the road is a race tack. but unfortunately i can't rely on internet because of some problems we have on the phone line..

I would much rather be working from home. I wished I could find a good program, where I could get paid as much as I was making from my last sales position. So now, I just do a little here and a little there. I am hoping in the end I will find that one program that the residuals really add up.
In the meantime, I am still looking for a job. If something comes up that pays really good, I think I will still keep working online part-time. I have done it for over 10 years, even though I was employed for a number of those. I just don't make as much online when I am working a full-time job, obviously.

Well due to health issues I am unable to go out to work so working from home is not so much a choice but one which is a must for me. But even if my health did not dictate where I worked I would still choose to work from home as I can work when I am most productive rather than forcing myself to work within the confines of a set period and most likely produce sub standard work by doing so.
But as you said there are negatives to working from home one of them being social interaction. From my own experience it is important that when working from home you should make the time to go out and interact with others, even if it's just a walk to the corner shop to get a paper and have a chat with the shopkeeper.
I actually don't see that working via the internet from home would limit your learning abilities as if you want to make a living online it is a continually developing industry and the need to continually learn is a must. In fact since working from home I would say that I have had to learn more than I would if I was still going to work in an office.

By learning abilities i meant that in some jobs you can learn from working with others, but you have presented a great expample of where working from home is a necessary requirement. And i definetly agree about interacting with other people, i know that working on the computer isnt just going to turn you into a drone, but going out also adds a sense of freedom to working.

I prefer both...
Really, you could be working in a company while having a part-time job over the internet. You could be putting all your effort at your work, but during breaks or after duty, you can just surf the net and do something else while again earning something. Like mylotting, I do this during our break times or during lunch. I really consider mylotting a hobby and the same time its a second job to me, because well, we earn money here, right?
So i would prefer to work at work and when I get home work another job in the internet. And besides, this means double pay.

if i had the choice, i would choose working at home because i cant still take care of my kids and get paid at the same time. if only there are really good place in the net where i can work at home, then that would really be great. so far now what i am doing to earn online is to join sites and participate in whatever is required there i can get paid. and it takes a lot of my time sometimes because it is many different sites. some $200 monthly pay working at home would be so very okay for me.

Working in a company environment is somewhat stressy but you can have a good social life in the same time. If you are working for a company, you can have better benefits and incentives. On the other hand, working at home seems to be convenient on other terms. You don't need dress up and to hurry up in the morning going to work, you save more money for transportation and gas (if you have a car and you drive to work). You don't get stressed with traffic and your work load and other work colleagues, you are your own boss. You have more time for your kids or family. I have worked most of the time in a company, I want to choose working at home. If I can earn stable via online work like between 600 USD-1000 USD or more, I will be fine but it seems that IT professionals (web masters, web page designers, etc) are the ones earning those rates so basically I still need to stick to my full-time job.

My previous company had a program where they allowed some people to work from home. They only allowed married women to apply for this though. They recognized that there were some staff who might otherwise take no pay leave to look after their children for a few years if they couldn't tele-commute from home. But such arrangements are not always neat and can only work for some kinds of jobs. They don't interact face to face with staff, and if they need to meet customers, working from home is not practical. For me, I like the idea of working at home. In fact, I left my job voluntarily more than 4 years ago, and have been working at home and doing my own investments sitting in front of my home computer. I don't have a boss and totally no work stress, and I am totally accountable to myself. The best perk is that my time is totally flexible and I can work anytime I wish. As long as I can make enough money for my living, working at home is a fantastic arrangement for me and I am loving it.

Since I just gave birth, I prefer working at home at the moment...so that I can keep an eye on my little one. I ould love to be first hand in his growth and development. However, I still plan to go back to my original job, when I think he is old enough for me to leave with him to a nanny.

If I had a choice, I would choose to work out of my home. For one thing, there is less stress having to deal with supervisor and other people on an daily basis. Having your own business allows a person to set their own hours and be in control of what they make. If you have a family, it allow you to spend more time with your family enjoy watching your kids grow up. Now, there is a down side to it too. For one if you don't work you don't get paid for you efforts. Sometimes it hard to stay focus on your work at certain time of the day when you have to deal with your family. Me personally, I rather have more control over my income and my life than letting someone else have it.

i personally feel that you will actually work better in a designated workstation at work, it is also alot more social, but working from home can be a good idea in some cases for example single moms etc.. cause when they work from home they can still be alot with their children instead of beeing at one job.

It would be good if I have a full time job outside and a part time job at home. But there is really no job on the net at the moment. Time is one factor too. Working 8 hours on a regular job take much of our time and a job on the net will take few hours in a day and having a family will be too much. So if i have to choose I will have to take a regular job- the are added benefits on it.

I have been unemployed for a very long time and earning my living by doing my own investments from home. Being single I would really prefer to working at a place of work because of the human interaction which I really miss. Of course I don't have to put up with the beauracy of a company or with terrible bosses so from that respect at home is better in my case. However, if one is still working for some entity but working at home, they might not be able to get away from those.

Working at home using my computer it's so great. I love working at work when the boss is calm and not shouting on me. When I got a mistakes. I love the boss teaching me with brotherly kindness and with kind words while teaching me what should I do. I feel happy and energetic if my boss is kind to me. At home work I like encoding at computer. Writing a blog and it's fun to do. The boss is yourself.

I prefer both, in situations that today, one job is not enough.
Having full time work from an employer as to be a part time work from home through online jobs is very much ideal for me.
As of now I am looking for something to do part time online to earn while I am full time attending the office.

I would enjoy doing both. I would work part time and work part time again from home on the computer. This way, you can still get out of the house and still socialize with human beings! and this way you can have more time cooking, cleaning and taking care of the kids if you work from home and set your own hours. This would actually be a dream come true for me. I would really appreciate spending more time with my children if I had the opportunity to work from home.

Time has changed - it would be preferable to work from home since this would reduce the cost and expenses - personal expenses like commuting, day care expense for children, food expenses, reduce your auto insurance premiums and many other expenses besides the time. For the employer this would also mean a cut in the cost of space, energy saving and also good relations and less human resource problem since his main concern is the work - out-put which can be given from home. Computers and internet has brought about a remarkable change- making the workd a smaller ploace, relations can be maintained through social network sites like mylot, my space, hub pages and so forth. Money can be generated from home working for oneself or for some one. Thus my choice is obvious - I would choice to work from home. Saves cost, insurances - maintain your home and relations - make the world a better place- save energy = "Go Green"
