Where do you get your writing ideas from?

I always find it hard to answer that question, because they can come from all sorts of areas. Today I wrote an article about dealing with the fear of losing your job. That was because yesterday I was browsing the Sainsbury's Magazine and saw a feature about life after redundancy, and the idea came to me. In the past ideas have been sparked off by TV programmes, newspaper stories, what someone said to me, what I've been thinking about, what I fall over in the street, what other authors have posted on content sites, and so on. A friend gave me a book of Writing Ideas, which are really prompts. I'm reading it but haven't needed to actually use it yet. Generally I have more ideas than I can actually work up. How about you?

i had a chance to write an article for my previous job. What i do is to write something that i felt i needed to share with someone. Sometimes our experiences, thoughts, feelings, emotions, etc are the most powerful ideas to write about. Someone out there might be interested to read a portion of our lives.

i think that is the best part on how you will hide yourself within a character or within a clause of words. Writing is an endless work because you are not really bound to some rules and regulations. It is never ending to the point of making a short story, article, "news", etc.

I mainly write fantasy stories. My writing inspirations are mainly from my dreams at night...
Sometimes most of the things I write are about whatever I have faced in life and then I add some fictious elements to it...

Personally for me, I find my Writing ideas always stemming from either things going on in my life, around the world, or sometimes from other things I have read, seen or know others are experiencing as well. Whether it be in here, Associated Content, or wherever, I seem to always be sparked with New ideas and thoughts I feel is worth talking about and usually find them worthwhile as well.

I get my ideas from things that happen to me during the day, or what I see on the news. Sometimes I'll take a story I am reading and build a discussion about something within that story.

i started doing most of my writing for work. I found that i needed to write somehing to catch my employees eye and to make them want to read my emails so i started to write my emails like they were from Dr. Seuss. They were well known company wide and everyone looked forward to them. guess you do what works

ideas are as simple as the life around us. I can see myselfd using a topic like negative engery. I walked in to my office which I share with the day time phone operator because while out on maternity leave they gave her my shift. i was excited, happy, bursting with ready. The day operator had had a bad day her daughter had gotten her car... and only mode of traspertation inpounded and arrested. That was not all that happen to her so needed less to say her bad day did not end with that event. But after standing in the office with her for only a moment I felt drained.
So as you can see don't look to hard. Ideas for writing can come from all over the place.

My dreams, mostly...my brain is a little hyperactive, and is always giving me writing material. I too usually have more ideas than I can do stuff with.
For my blog...well, I'm an alternative news blogger. Whatever's in the news is my material.

I find that I tend to write about things that I have read about, learned about recently, news reports, places that I have been or things that I have came across in my life. I recently wrote about Lyme Disease on Associated Content as my oldest daughter has it and it can be misdiagnosised so easily.
I try to keep a notebook close to me so that I can write about things as I think about them.

I get most of my writing ideas for my self-development articles from incidents that happen in my day-to-day working life with clients. Their questions seems to provide the inspiration. Sometimes the ideas flow thick and fast, and there are periods that may be several days or even weeks, where just nothing seems to come at all.
Sometimes I enjoy writing fictional stories and like you TV, newspaper stories and things I hear give me some good ideas. - Derek

Same as you there is no particular thing that gives me an idea, it comes from different sorts of areas as what you've mention above. Well, no matter how I have a wonderful ideas, I can't put it into writings because I find it very difficult to comprehend my ideas into a story or article. Maybe, I'm not good in writing. I always having problem on how to start it and how to end it in a good and amazing way. It is always my problem even since when I was still studying. I rather express it through words than put it into writings. Here in mylot, I don't really start a discussion because I don't know what should I need to discuss so that people will entertain or will be interested to comment or make a response. I used to response more often than making my own discussion.

I tend to do more responding than starting discussions too. But I have made a new resolution to start a few every week when I am at home. It does help the earnings. One of the ways you could write more if you want is to think up a conversation in your head and write that down word for word. See if that helps.

I get my ideas while waking int the woods, or just walking, if I see a bird or a aquirrel or just trees swaying in the breeze I get ideas and can write all sorts of stories.

Hello there jakill! For me, in order to write a stuff that is good and is interesting to your readers, you must have also a good and interesting inspiration to start with your writing. Also, your mood affects your style of writing and how your writing will turn out. You can have ideas from that. Ranging from your inspiration, your own mood, your impression on things that surrounds that concept, etc. You can have lots of ideas from things. You just got to have a good concept and a nice inspiration for your writing. :)

You're right about mood affecting style of writing. For me, it's even whether I can write at all. Yesterday I started drafting a piece about Chinese propoganda art; done most of the research and am about four paras in. Today I can't even bear to look at it. Now it's going to be Saturday's job because I'm out all day tomorrow.

I think you probably meant people will NOT come back. I like your sentiments about writing from experience and providing useful information. That certainly applies here. As a freelance writer, though, I often have to write about things and places I haven't actually experienced. That means lots of research which I love because I am continually learning about the world.

Sometimes I write ideas down in my journal, but most of my ideas come from each day's experiences whether spiritually, mentally, physically, what I hear, touch, feel, see, or taste. I love the movie "August Rush" where the little boy hears the music in his head and it comes from all around him. My daughter experiences this same thing and I guess that that is what happens to me when I write. Isn't life and writing grand!
