What does it take to be a badass?

There are the everyday people, and then there are the badasses. You've seen them, sometimes in fiction, sometimes in reality -- the people that rock the world around them.
But what does it take to be a badass? Can anyone become a badass? Or do badasses possess a certain quality from birth?
What do you think?

From my personal experience a badass possesses a certain amount of recklessness and confidence that most people don't. My husband has always been one and, yes, he was the same way as a child according to his brothers. He would take any dare, has never backed down from anyone in his life, enlisted in the Army at 17 and did two tours in Nam. After being discharged he rode with various motorcycle clubs over the years, had badass bikers working for him when he was a general contractor and had a reputation that was both good and bad. Today, at 61 and disabled with various health conditions, instead of kicking back...going fishing or taking it easy...we own a chopper shop where he builds bikes. He rides his Harley just about every day even though he has severe arthritis in his lower back and hip. He doesn't start trouble, he's actually very charismatic, but even at his current age and condition, he wouldn't consider backing down if someone challanged him.

I suppose it's worth asking...do badasses live longer than other people? I'd imagine someone with that "you can't hold me down" mentality would be less likely to let things like age or disabilities get in the way of their life.

I don't know about badasses specifically but I do know from what I've seen so far in my life that the people who stay active, both mentally and physically, seem to live longer. I met an 83 year old woman once when I was working out in the weight room at college. She was limber and in good health...sharp as a tack mentally and taking classes because she loved learning new things. My husband doesn't let his age or health keep him from doing what he likes to do but he is reasonable...he does accept the fact that he's not 30 anymore...hard as that is.

Even in the animal kingdom there are badasses. I see the badass chimps on television and they are really badasses and can kill other chimps and bad thing is that there are no chimp cops to stop them.
