I don't know honestly. I eat a ton of rice and am still a chunky monkey, but I have an endocrine issue that makes eating carbohydrates a real pain for me no matter what it is.
I love rice, we have it at least four times a week, and often I will make plain rice to add to a meal as a side dish just because i like it plain with salt.
I imagine that it has more to do with our bone structure and minor differences in out digestive bacteria that make a big difference.
Anyway, I hope you get a better answer then this because I am interested too...

Well; I do not think that this can be Generalized . In india as well as in many Asian countries and even in Japan , China etc , there are a number of fat (and some very fat ) people .
In fact , Obesity is increasingly becoming a major problem even in Asian countries .

its not with eating rice they are thin ,anyone's thinness can get with the reasons like excersize, genes, etc...not because they are eating rice .
you should eat healthy and do more excersize .anyone can be thin ,when they avoid fast foods like pizza ,cakes, and avoiding oil and salt.
Since its hot in Most asian countries there metabolism is higher, The food dosen't have chemicals like they do in america so that means the food is fresh, Very unlikely to stay at home all day.

Why most people in asia are thin/slim..........
Hi there, I don't know about this theory of your, Hee hee hee! Okay I do believe that a lot of people in America are meat and bread eaters. Think about it, we live in a fast food culture. Whereas Asians grow there own food/rice/vegetables. Also Asias are active as they are bent over in the rice fields but Americans do few active things, we ride almost every where that we go. Me personally I try to stay away from all fast food place and junk foods, I am expecting to be showing some really trimming hips off really soon. If we exercise 30 mins. a day we will all be slim....... This is my theory. Happy mylot!

Aside from our typical asian diet, perhaps the tropical weather keeps us in a saunna environment. I'm not really sure, but it seems reasonable.

I think it is not only related what they eat, but also how much they eat. Asian portions are much smaller than American. They also eat more fish and walk more.
It is not related to genes, but lifestyle...

That's a good curiosity, but maybe majority is like that. But not all of them, it depends on the place they live in, there Physical conditions, figure, or culture differences with regarding to food. but for me, it's the physical condition because some women are not gaining despite of how many food they eat.and some eat less than those thin or slim people..that makes me wonder why am getting heavier..

I think most of the Asians are thin, I'm Chinese and I'm veyr skinny and tall. But I think there are part of the Chinese are fat too, they might noget as fat as American, but there are some of them are over weight too.

am a filipina but i can say that we are not really into that thin thing unlike the chinese, taiwanese and thais. i mean if we look specifically at our beauty contestants and their beauty contestants they are thinner. maybe because they eat in bowls with limited space for meat and rice.
also, asians are naturally smaller in height and weight. that is why our bmi chart is different from the popular western bmi standards.

Haha! Well, to tell you honestly I don't eat rice at all and I really like to eat bread but I am slim. So think it is not about eating rice. Haha! I think asian people are thin because they have smaller body frame unlike the caucasians and the black who have larger body frames.
By the way, the French like to eat bread and they don't eat rice but they are thin! Haha!
Happy MyLotting!

hello there.... i am also thin but i am trying to gain weight by eating more.....ARE YOU ENERGETIC? WHAT IS YOUR WORK?
hmmm.... rice and bread are both carbohydrates....I think it is our metabolism..... though some people eat a lot and yet they are still thin.... their metabolism works fast... it burns the food that they eat.... and i think maybe..... just maybe.... some people are just too energetic they use the converted energy from the food we eat........

Hi there cainam! Good day to you! I think people in asia are thin because they are hardworking people. They stress themeselves with lots of physical activities during the day and work hard to earn money for their family whom they really love. And that makes asian people responsible and family oriented people. Also, that is why I think asian people are good in martial arts because they are good in physical activities and they are hardworking. Well that is why I think asian people are thin. But not all. :)

Yes i totally agree that it has to with a cultural diet basically,,,,, im not sure about all asian countries but my boyfriend is japanese american but his parents were born and raised in japan, and they didnt really eat red meat there and yes ate a lot of rice and fish, where as in the USA we eat red meat, and a lot of carbs...so you are right about that asians are usually small because of genetics and food habits

Hi Cainam, not true that most people in Asia are thin or slim. Those who live in big cities and have cars are not thin.
I have visited China a few times, those in cities are getting really fat. I think it's the exercise habit, they really cut down walking, and cycling, so they ballooned.
Even many people in Singapore are not thin, with bus stops at every 400 m apart, there is hardly any need to walk.
Those people in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia are not that thin too.
But those staying out of cities are very slim. The Swiss living in those small towns in Switzerland, are really slim, tall and beautiful.
I guess more to do with level of physical activity than food.

Actually rice contains a lot of carbohydrate that makes us, the Asians gain weight. But it balanced by our small portion when eatiing. When I go out to restaurant, the restaurant will serve you just enough portion of food, instead in America, they will serve you gigantic portion of food plus they also drink a lot of soda. My sister told that in Burger King NY, Cola and other soft drink are free flow, so u can take as much as you want. That is why there are a lot of obesities case there.

I'm asian and before I came to Europe there's no butter, cheese, bread and cream in my daily diet, as well as those desserts with excessive sugars and damned fired potato chips. So obviously I gain weight here. Asian ways of cooking are much more balanced with a great diversity, but Westerners are just stick to several certain stuffs, someting could be really boring and needs extra excercises to burn the extra calories.

maybe it's because of our way of living..compare us, asians, from the west..Like you said about rice and bread..Yes, food is one. We eat rice which is a carbohydrate and they often eat meat which is protein, check out their hamburgers, the size of their hamburger is triple the size of ours..And another one is our genes.

Hi cainam . . great question .. my thought was when I read your post is that unlike us Americans when we eat bread most people smear butter all over it and it is more an added piece to the meal. Whereas people in Asia eat rice as a staple part to the meal and have fish and vegetables with it or mixed in with the fish and veggies.
