Yeah, it's the hard disk that you format. All that does is make the hard drive available to the operating system that will use it. Mac's use HFS, Windows use FAT32/NTFS/WinFS. Linux uses EXT. You can format it countless times. There are two types of format, quick format and normal format. The quick format takes about 20 seconds or so. the normal format takes several minutes to several hours depending on the size of the hard disk and it's speed, but that type of format would check for any bad spots on the disk and remap them. there's a certain advantage apparent but for the most part use quick format.

Hi Blena07,
Well, as other said you cant format a cpu, but you can format a hard disk. Now every hard disk have a lifespan. A long lifespan if I may add. You can format your hard disk many times you like, but I'm a bit curious... What makes you want to format your harddisk in the first place? I wonder.

You can not format a CPU. But you can format a hard disk.
Not sure but I have formatted my hard disk in the pass for more than a dozen of times. Maybe a hundred is possible. Formatting won't do any damage to your hard disk so if you think you need to foramt it, then go ahead do it.

The answer is CPU can't be formatted as this the Central Processing unit and burnt firmware by the manufacture. The question was not about hard disc or floppy disc or USB flash etc.

You can format your hard disk as many times as you want, but it's quite tiring and it takes long hours just to load up again all the drivers and softwares. So If I were you I'd only format my PC or hard disk if there is an important need for it.

i wont recommend Hard Disk formatting as it will decrease the life of your Hard Disk. do it only when you are left with no other solutions. This should be the last option to use. I do it seldom, only when i have no other solution.
