Defending his peace-making trip to Egypt to a British journalist recently, Obama praised Egypt for maintaining peace with Israel, something he said "isn't easy".
This surprised me, aren't most of his senior advisors supposedly Jewish?
And isn't Israel the most democratic and peaceable Nation in the region?

I dont understand your post properly, what I get from it is Obama prasing Egypt for maintaining peace with Isreal which is actualy not easy. If he said that then he is right because like most Arab States Egypt was once an enemy of Isreal and also took part in the six days war.. So if they have peace with Isreal, it's actually something to praise because it isn't an easy thing to do

but it seemed more like a criticism of Israel than praising Egypt. This would represent a complete turnaround in US policy, and not something expected of even this President.

Lol, that is a very interesting observation. Obama is trying to reign in Israel, yet, yes, many of his senior advisers have that faith at least in their background. They might not practice it as faithfuls though. As to Israel being democratic, yes, peaceful, not always. If memory serves me well, they took Gaza by force and extended their territory way beyond the borders originally set for them, when Israel was established after WWII.

But generally peaceful to Egypt, right? And more peace-willing than the Palestinians?

Egypt probably realized that after six days war, with several arab countries colluded together trying to wipe Israel off middle east not only failed, it also resulted in losing their northern territory to Israel. With peace treaty between them, Egypt got their land back and learned that Israel is not that easy to bully into submission even though it is just a tiny country there. Not because Egypt wanted peace , it is because Israel is strong enough to defend against any aggression from Arab countries and manage to show Egypt it is of their own interest to accept Israel right to exist and living peacefully along each other.
