Reuseable Grocery Bags...

Before we had "paper or plastic" in our lexicon, there was only paper bags. This was seen as a bad thing by the greenies because paper kills trees. Now the greenies are complaining about the very plastic bags they forced on us in the first place.
The latest appeasement program is reuseable grocery bags.
How long do you think it will be before the greenies start complaining about some environmental problem caused by the reuseable bags? What do you think will be the issue that turns them against reuseable bags?

Given that the bags are made of everything from burlap to cotton, both of which are bio-degradable, I doubt they'll find one. They also have the added value of better durability. I can stuff more groceries into one of those bags time and time again than I could a paper bag or a plastic bag.
They're actually a really good idea. The only problem is their initial cost. So I doubt we'll be hearing any complaints, short of maybe how much they cost.

Paper is both biodegradeable and recycleable, yet the greenies found a reason to hate paper bags... and lobby for plastic.

The brown paper bags also attracted roaches and mice when they were in storage as well.

Plastic bags were developed at the demand of environmentalists... why are they complaining now? If they are complaining about a product that they insisted on, what makes you think they won't complain about their latest "must use" ?

simply because most people dont recycle their plastic bags...thats the issue...this way its easier not to just throw away and recycle the bags...its way better for the environment...

Until they decide it's time to push for something different.. then they will protest the use of the reuseable bags, just like they have done with almost everything else.

I actually get why the plastic bags are being recalled so to speak. Ever see the documentary on the ocean dump? It's pretty eye opening. I think perhaps when they began pushing those plastic bags in order to save the trees that they did not forsee what the plastic was going to do to the earth. The reusable bags are the best solution i've seen so far. I have about 10 of them. I use them for my groceries and I use them for other things as well. Had them for months and they show no signs of wear. I'm sure that when it comes time to dispose of them...it'll be a problem but by using them I've personally not thrown thousands and thousand of plastic back into the earth. Multiply that by everyone who also uses these bags and yes...it does help. maybe too little too late but it is a positive move i think. just my cyber thoughts.

That's been the problem all along, they push things on us without any forethought.

still, these reusable bags just have to be better than the plastic. I use them and I really don't see how this can be a bad thing. I think this may be one push that was thought out and maybe as a result of seeing just how bad the plastic ones are for our planet.

I think x hit the nail on the head...they'll complain about the manufacturing process that created them in the first place. Personally I don't use them (yeah, hate me). I go to the store from home, from our business, on the way home from my grandson's ball game, on my way back from someplace else. My schedule is too irregular to be able to count on having grocery bags in whatever vehicle I happen to be using at the time.

Their way ahead of you, they have been whining about disposable diapers for years.. yet, one of the reasons disposable diapers became so popular back in the 70s was how environmentally friendly they were.

The complaints were based on all the buckets of ammonia or bleach that parents used to keep dirty diapers in until wash day. Niether are used in diaper pails now, but back then, it was how things were done.
I'm wondering when eco groups are going to turn against cloth diapers again though. Using cloth diapers usually means running the washer more often, and each load is supposed to be run through twice.

Reusable bags are great to that we had to be also aware on using it. That makes it a better greening process as we reduce plastic production..

One bagger at a grocery store I frequent remarked that he hated people to bring in those reusable tote bags for their groceries. He didn't want to touch them, said he didn't know where they had been or what might be on them. I think he has a point. Those bags are made of fabric and could absorb everything from airborne bacteria coughed on them to really nasty viruses being spewed on them by sick children and who knows when that customer last washed her hands?
The problem the greenies have with their "don't kill trees" philosophy is that old trees do very little to rid the atmosphere of carbon dioxide. An old forest is a very poor carbon sink, you need new growth. You get new growth through forest management, the cutting of old trees for lumber and paper, and the subsequent planting of new trees to replace them. Paper bags were good for the environment, but they insisted we stop using them.
Most of what the eco-terrorists make such a fuss about, they are wrong about. They don't understand the basic science behind their policies, and so they will ultimately be responsible for the extinction of the human race. That is something they will probably like.

True, we hear so much about "renewable resources". Nothing is more renewable than trees.

Your bagger friend makes a great point! We are literally trusting everyone who uses them to keep them clean... including keeping all the surfaces they come in contact clean.

reusable grocery bags are indeed a great option. previously, we used to have cloth bags which were washed when dirty and used again and again. but since the advent of the revolutionary plastic, things have changed and unfortunately these changes are proving hazardous to the environment.
i don't think anyone need complain about reusable bags if they know what is good for them or the future generation.

I guess both have disadvantages in them whether it is plastic or paper. SO better to really think of what can really be substituted to this in order to protect us all. ALl to evaluate really what can really be more environmental preserving over the other whats really important is to save the planet from being destroyed.

I've never understood the issue with paper or plastic because both are recyclable. Most stores have bins you can return them to so they can be properly taken care of. I personally use reusable bags myself because I get a discount for using them where I shop. However, I'm sure like anything else people will find something to complain about. My guess is it will be that they don't break down properly when they get old, or something such.

using the cloth bags is good. personally i find them to hold more items and it is easier to carry things. the plastic bags were good in the beginning but then they started to make them so cheaply that they would break. i reuse them as wastebasket liners. i think these environmentalists are nutty and extremists at times. i recycle when i can and i try to be mindful of certain things but i don't sit around and worry about how long something is going to sit in a landfill. i have been known to pick up other people's furniture that they are throwing out and refinish and refurbish it and i try to do things like that often but i am not crazy about it.

It will be you can't suffocate the ney sayers. As we grow as a population, we learn things we did not know before. As such, we at times have to change the way we do things. Or would you rather still be in diapers rather then use the toilet?

Washington D.C. is trying to pass a tax of 5% on people who choose to use paper or plastic instread of the reuseable bags. It is going to be voted on later this year, if this gets passed it would be 1st tax of its kind.

There are available reusable Grocery bag in the supermarket already in our place. The only problem is a bit expensive is the price rather than the plastic bag that was free from the supermarket whenever you buy with them.

You just can't win Ted. With some people the very EXISTENCE of plastic is offensive, recycled or otherwise. I personally use the reusable bags because I walk to the grocery store and don't trust paper or plastic to last the trip with heavy groceries.

They'll find one. If they have nothing to complain about they'll figure something out. We have to get the groceries home somehow. I like those bags. I use the u-scan for multiple reasons, this being one of them as the baggers/cashiers don't like them. Now, unfortunately, I tend to forget to put them back into the car after I put all the groceries away. That's still a habit I have to form;)

The reusable bags are a great environment saver. I hate seeing plastic bags flying around at the beach or around my house. The greenies might say that the material should be recycled material. I always felt that those types of people find something to complain about but all I hear is them complaining and not really making an impact. It is like they don't have to have a reason because they find the smallest thing to complain about.
