Buying Online, Shipping, Not HOME?

This is sad...
I've only bought online twice and I've never been home for the two times, so my item is never there! My buddies told me they would just leave the item at my doorstep but NO!
Am I doing something wrong, do I have to post a note saying that they should leave the items on my front porch?

in Italy it is not allowed to have docs left in front of our doors.
someone at home should sign for the item.
since i'm not at home all day, last year one item has been sent back to
the shipper and i had to pay again to have it delivered.
so i decided to ask to deliver everything to my office, cause there is always someone at the gate to sign to receive goods!

I sometimes buy stuff online too and I always let them ship the items to my house. There has never been a problem with the shipping. I always got the items I purchased in good form. I am also often times not at home when they deliver the items, but they just ring the doorbell and let my housekeeper sign the form saying the item is with her. They just leave the item with her. When I come home, my housekeeper then gives it to me.
