Isn't it sad?

In some places in India, girls get engaged when they are 3-5 years old. They get married when they are 10 or so. And by the time they are 30, they're grandparents. And if your fiance dies when you are engaged, you are considered a widow and not allowed to wear bright colors or go out in public. In some places, you even get burned when your fiance gets cremated no matter how old you are. Isn't this custom horrible? Shouldn't the goverment do something about this?

The custom is horrible, I wonder what does the government say about right now and what can the people do for this to change.
I am not sure about the past of India, but study it and find out why people thought it better for the women to die with their husbands, and find a way to tell the people it is not necessary to do that anymore.

I see, from your point of view, can a woman in a small village survive without her husband? Do women in small villages are expected to stay home and just be wives and mothers? I think it will be harder to change how people think and feel than the law but it can happen.
The only way for me to find out about India life will be to search it in the internet, I hope this is one custom that goes away, it had to be a hard life in India for women if their families wanted to insure them a husband when they were as young as 3-5. I wish you all good luck, and trust me, it might take time but people do change.

Most of India has banned that custom but some villages still allow it.

The girl can't refuse. It's arrange marriage and the parents decide if she should get married or not. Besides, she doesn't even know anything about marriage or anything. She's just a kid. How is she supposed to know? It's not right how the girl doesn't get to decide what she wants to do.

It's banned in most places of the country so atleast that's better than it not being banned at all.

that's pathetic! Seriously someone should do something about it and yes you were right only the Govt. can do something to stop this all. I don't understand why men consider women like a pet or even worse than that...may be like a toy to play with and torn or break whenever you like to do so!

That is sick, cruel, evil. Loads of words come into my head but I shall not curse! That is so cruel, they dont even know what a relationship is at 3 years old, damn some kids cant even talk when they are that age!! That is pushing kids into a life of misery and then as its family traditiont hey will do the same with their kids I expect. It pains me to know that thibgs like this still go on in the workd today!!! :(:(

I know. They think it's normal but it isn't. This is probably why India's population is so high. If the Gov. stopped this, it would make their country a little less crowded too.

Really...does it exist until now, this brutal practice?
This is really sad. How could the government of India tolerated
this kind of practice. There's no freedom in it. Married at the age of 10?
I wouldn't subject my son or my daughter in that kind of life.

It's banned in most places although some rural areas still practice it.

How old are the men? You said nothing about the husbands ages.

They are sometimes the same age but usually are older. Sometimes even up to 5-10 years older. Many times in the village, lots of girls die of childbirth.

Stories like this make me think how lucky we are in the UK and USA to have freedom and do what we want, marry who we want ect.. It's really bad how these people are treated this way and probably if somebody tried to differ than they'd probably get shot =/ this should be changed, it's appalling

It is appalling and they should've already banned the thing for the whole country, not just part of it.

That's just horrible. I really couldn't imagine going through that, especially as a child. I couldn't be in a culture where you don't have the right to chose your own path of life. I think some of thier customs are beautiful, but I disagree on this one.

I agree that this is a serious problem. It's actually only contributing to the incredible problem of slavery and human trafficking in India. (If you want to know more, look up International Justice Mission, Not For Sale, Stop The Traffick and Polaris Project, just to name a few.)
In India there is still a widespread notion that children can be treated this way. The government certainly should do something, and they are trying, but clearly either not hard enough or they're incapable, or maybe it's just so widespread that it's hard to get rid of. But it's a really awful issue.
Little kids are bought and sold in India a lot, especially for child brides. So I mean, trafficking and these child marriages are pretty closely intertwined. It's all quite awful.

Some of the areas have undergone the change but the custom still exists in some areas. The goverment didn't do such a good job of ridding all of India of that custom. They need to do better.

this is ridiculous to implement. the governtment should take immediate action on those who apply this method. it is cruel, unfair, and so many words can be used for this. this is a very serious matter which need to take a serious action against this follower.

That's a really sad and disturbing reality here in India. Well, that was the tradition they have believed for so many generations passed and i don't think that their government will do something about it.
As for my own personal opinion, kids can't decide for anything on their own, and that includes marriage. And to give your kid away at that early age is really sickening and highly insane. But what to do, they have been practicing it for how many years right?

I don't know. A hundred years maybe. Still, they should let the kids get married at a descent age. Even, if the parents get to decide.
