Does anyone else here pay fees for public high school? We have to pay book fee's, lab fee's, art fee's about the only thing I haven't paid for is the seat she sits in. Shouldn't our taxes cover these costs?

I don't pay for any fees at this time for my children at their particular public school. I would say it depends on the budget...what was passed and what didn't pass. There have been times here that certain public schools have not passed certain things in the budget and the families/kids had to pay out of pocket for certain things. Although it was nothing like books, labs or anything for classes...it was sports or extra curricular activities.

Here in India, people pay admission fee, library fee, medical fees etc. Those whose income is very low, they have to make special application for exemption from fees. Otherwise, a nominal fee is charged and people do not mind paying because compared to private school, the fee is negligible.

Yep here in Australia every school has a fee of some kind and the amount varies widely. I paid this year alone 250 per student in high school which was on top of an education allowance. In the primary paid art Levy's administration costs library costs photo copying contribution ( but has to supply a ream of office paper)

Education costs have gone up while education budgets have been cut in many places. Add to that the fact that people don't want to pay more taxes, and you have today's mess. Politicians talk about supporting education, but many do not.
