Is it a sound like metallica? or someting like Fall out Boy and Greenday? or maybe something like Motley Crue? or Airborne Toxic Event and Carolina Liar? or Nine Inch nails and Marilyn Manson?
To me "rock" is a broad category that all the bands I mentioned fit into. Then I consider them each in sub-categories, like Pop-rock, hard-rock, industrial-rock and indie-rock.

It's a very general term. There are so many sub-genres that fit in tothe group.
Also, even the people in the business don't know how to describe a song.
As a song writer, I've sent many songs to publishers. There was one song I considered to be Rock, but one publishers said it was too heavy for them, and another one said is was too Pop. Go figure.

Rock, at its simplest, is the basic form of music with drums, bass guitar and guitar. It goes way back in 1950's where there are no invented effects on guitar yet (distortions, delays. etc.).

I agree with your assessment of rock. Rock is a huge genre that holds more bands than I would ever attempt to count!

Rock is way to Generic and General. You essentially have to, go further, into the Sub-genres such as Glam Rock, Shock Rock, Blues Rock, Hard Rock, which all progresses, prob rock, Grunge Rock, Alternative Rock and so on, as well as Heavy metal, Glam Metal, Doom Metal, Thrash Metal, Speed Metal, Power Metal, and so on....The problem is, nowadays, people with little knowledge or Rock will genelarise it too much. If u watch articles about Rock stars on say, MSN website or whatever, ull find people like Jonhas Brohters or whatever who, may be classed as Pop Rock or even Rhianna or someone like tha who, clearly is not Rock. People should listen to Rock or Metal and see what they feel they fit into.
Metallica,: Heavy Metal, Thrash metal
Alice Cooper: Shcok Rock, Hard Rock
AC/DC Hard Roc, (Some class them as Heavy metal as well)
Black Sabbath: Heavy metal/Hard Rock
Led Zeppelin: Hard Rock
Deep Purple: Hard Rock
Dio: Hard Rock, Heavy Metal
W.A.S.P.: Glam Rock, Glam Metal, Hard Rock (they are much better thanMotley Crue..)
But can you understnad what Im saying, the term "Rock" is far to generalised today.

To me rock is any music with a screaming guitar, strong drumbeat, and great rhythm. So any band from Journey to Metallica is rock to me.Even today's " country" I consider rock. They don't use a fiddle , they have more electric guitars than steel ones and the songs have the same structure of classic rock song. I call it Rockabilly, so it is rock too.

I agree with you. But the first thing that comes to my mind when you say Rock would be Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones and The Beatles. Classic/hard. :)
They all have the wildest expressions and outfits, lyrics and loudest drums. I like classic rock the most. :)

I agree with you - A LOT of different bands fit into the "rock" category - and bands like Fall out Boy & Greenday would even be borderline pop, if you ask me. But I seriously hate categorizing music - it's so stupid considering everyone has their own opinions of what certain genres should consist of. (For example, the horrible "punk" vs. "pop punk" vs. "punk rock" debacle). It's seriously not worth the time that we put into categorizing bands or musicians - why don't we just accept them as having a unique sound of their own? Category-less? I'm sure we'd be much more productive if we would just judge music upon whether or not we like it than whether it belongs to a certain genre.
