What will it take?

What do you think it will take to get the Braves back to the postseason? I've been a Braves fan since '80 or '81 and like any other Braves fan it's difficult to watch them miss the postseason 3 or 4 years in a row after at least winning the division title 14 times in a row. I know the postseason is the ultimate goal of any team but I just don't think the approach of the upper management is getting it done or is going to get it done. I think they need to concentrate on rebuilding the foundation of the team like the one they had in the '90s. They need to start with a quality pitching rotation like they had in the '90s. It's almost impossible to make it to the postseason without solid pitching. And then they should look to the minors for young guys they can bring up together and begin building some chemistry with. I don't know. I'm no expert on all this. What do you think? Should they commit totally to rebuilding or should they continue in the direction they've been going for the past few years?

This may sound crazy, but I think they are on the right path and pretty close. They are 8 games out right now, but about 2 weeks ago they were within 5. The phillies are good. I don't think we will beat them out this year, but next year we will have a shot. The Braves have been building up very good starting pitching. Hanson just came up this year and he is a very dominate force. Vazquez has very electric stuff, and has had some very good outings this year. Lowe is just a solid sinkerball pitcher and the ace of the staff. Jurrjens had a great year last year and is pitching good again this year. Kawakami has been a disappointment (at least to me). I really thought he would fare better. He has a 2.69 ERA which isn't reflected in his 9-7 record. I want to say that I heard on a telecast a few weeks ago that the braves were 2nd in ERA in the NL behind the Giants. The bullpen has been very shaky lately. Gonzo and Soriano have done better this year than I expected, but most of the bullpen is shaky at best. We need one or two young guys to step up (or pick someone up on a trade). Offense has been a struggle. I hate to see Jeff struggle and get traded, but the good news is the #1 rated prospect by baseball america plays right field for the Mississippi Braves. I live in the Jackson area so I have seen him play a few times personally, and he is the real deal. We lack a good power bat in the lineup, but there are several solid spots. With all of that being said, I think our rotation is coming around nicely. Lowe is the only one that is getting old, and I think he was a short term pickup. There is another good prospect who saw a few innings that is in Triple-A which may get brought up in his place eventually. With that solid rotation, the Braves aren't far off from being contenders again.

I pretty much agree with everything you said except where it concerns Kawakami. I think we all had high expectations with him especially in light of the success of past Japanese hurlers that have come to the Majors. I just try to remind myself that Japanese baseball is a little different than MLB over here. I know it's got to be an adjustment for him. I think next year we'll be able to get a better idea of what to expect from KK. But hey, everyone has their favorites. I mean, I've seen posts on MLB.com where some fans would prefer they get rid of Kotchman. I don't have a problem with Casey. He may not put up the kinds of numbers that some of the other guys do but he does play darn good defense. The Bravos are playing a lot better right now and they do have a shot at the post-season, still. It's just difficult, as a fan, to see them miss out on the post-season year after year when I've been so accustomed to see them in it every year. It's easy to second guess the management and we all do to some extent. We all have our own ideas about what makes a winning team. Maybe they'll get it straightened out soon. I still think, depending on how this season ends up, that they still need to concentrate on building a new foundation. And, I think they are closer to that this year than they have been for the last several years. Maybe next year these new prospects they have in the farm system will get a shot at helping to build the next dynasty. Thamks for your response. GO BRAVES!!

I hope you are right about KK. He struggled early in the year with control despite being a control pitcher in Japan. I haven't watched any of his starts lately, but I expected him to get comfortable and back to his old ways late in the season. By the lines he has put up, I haven't been convinced. I understand your pain. I have deeply missed the 90s when you just couldn't wait until the postseason started so you could get past all the "meaningless" regular season games. I also miss trying to predict how early the Braves would clinch the east. Maybe I am just a optimist (I am still positive about the Browns :P), but I think they are on the right path. I hate to see the Phills pick up Cliff Lee. That is scary. Heres to a good finish. Go Braves! *doing tomahawk chop*
