What do YOU believe education is?

I believe education is in fact the enlightenment of one's mind, not just a simple piece of paper that says you can act like a seal and jump through hoola-hoops. The reason I ask this is that I got into an argument with someone, and to make it short and sweet. He got really mad at me, and started waving around his Ph.D in biology and his job that makes 60k per year. So I simply said, "Congratulations, you have a piece of paper that says you're a philosophical doctor, you can't even prescribe people medicine, you can only refer them to someone who is BETTER than you to give them medicine, all you'll ever amount to is one of those people who hates their jobs and every single day wishes they were 17 again, and during their mid-life crysis buys a motorcycle, just because you want to be young again, while on the other hand, I will waddle my way through life enjoying every second of it, motorcycle or not, and do you want to know why, because my life isn't going to revolve around a stupid piece of paper that says I'm philosophical doctor, because I can guarantee I'm smarter than you." Now when I said that he said "F you" and then logged out of the chat room, so I'm guessing I basically nailed his life dead on. Now I'm wondering, what is TRUE education? Is education really that simple piece of paper saying you did all your homework like a good boy? Or is education what I believe it to be? The enlightenment of the mind through complex conversation and hands on activities etc etc... What do you guys think?

So...are you saying you decided not to go to college? lol I think education is what you want it to be. It can be a way to get that "piece of paper" or it can be the "education of life experiences". I personally don't think one has more or less value than the other. But maybe I have to say that, because I never did get that piece of paper! ;-) I do sincerely think that there are a lot of so-called intelligent or "educated" people out there that have a long way to go in being "educated" when it comes to human relations. Some of the most intelligent people in the word have absolutely no social skills, no empathy, no respect for humanity. Welcome to myLot.

True education is a process, and as you say, not a "piece of paper". The education of our youth should be to prepare them for a lifetime of learning. Too many times I think even the college system just worries about producing individuals capable of doing a "job", instead of training people to learn faster, better and continuously. That mentality leads alot of people to think they can stop learning as soon as they get that magical degree that gets them a job.
