Life as it is vs. life as it should be.

I wanna talk about books a little here. First of all, in my humble opinion, there are two types: the one that tells us how life and we as humans should be. In that category fall all the self-help books, books about human development, books that give us spiritual guidance, etc. Authors like Stephen Covey, Anthony Robbins, Scott Peck, the Bible and the Koran come to mind. There are obviously novels out there with a message, but they tend to be moralizing. If the author wants to teach, let him do it up-front, I like it just fine and I have read many of them.
In the second category fall all the books, mostly novels, that describe life and us humans as we are. They don’t add, they don’t take away. And here come my two superstars in that category, Stephen King and John Irving. (You might argue that Stephen King is a horror book writer, but there I would disagree. He uses horror as a tool to describe the real demons in us.)
Those two can be painful to read, but life itself is painful lots of times. What makes them great writers is that they give you exactly the right amount of information about their characters, they provide the reader (‘constant reader’, in Stephen King’s case) basically with a template where his/her imagination can roam freely and fill in the blank parts. I’ve read most of the novels of both of them, and many I have read several times.
What kind of literature do you prefer, and why? Please share.

I prefer the self help books myself. When a problem pops in my life I like to find some self help books that help me to see view points and apply them to my life. I suffered from depression so the first thing I did instead of depending on medicine is to read self help books on this subject. I learned so much from learning about cognitive thinking and my life changed for the good. Now I know what I need to do to prevent depression. Also in relationships I have read many self help books that have helped me tremendously. I suggest that anyone who has some type of problem in their life to read self help books they will help. When you read these type of books there are many different ways to help, you just have decide what sounds right to you and pick and choose what sounds sinceable and go for it! I highly recommend self help books!

Hi, i chance upon your discussions and found them interesting. I love reading too but i have never read a Stephen King book, though i have one with me which was given by a nephew,("Mystery"). I have been a fan of Sydney Sheldon, John Grisham and Fern Michaels to name a few. I love romance, suspense and a lot more. A few years back i can even stay awake all night reading.

I have also read quite a few of King's work. I particularly like his compilation of short stories. I have also enjoyed reading his longer works and love rereading them over when time allows me.
I just love how King tells a story within the story and how they mesh together is brilliant. Unfortunately the latest I have read of his work was the Bag of Bones I think, it is quite sad really but there it is. I just don't have the time to spend...
