Have you ever been laid off from your job?

A friend of mine just called me while holidaying in the lovely Island of Fiji. He was in tears because he just received a call from his boss to tell him that he's being laid off.. while on vacation! Now I have heard of ridiculous ways of being laid off but while on holiday? That totally sucks.. I got laid off once, but at least I was in the middle of shopping. I got the call to say that I no longer have a job.. That ruined my shopping experience! Have you ever been laid off or fired? In what way did that happen and how did you react to the news that you no longer have a job?

Personally, I havent ever been laid off, but I know many people who have, especially now while more and more business are feeling the pressure of the ecenomic crisis... However, I have never heard of anyone being laid off over the phone... Every person I know who has been laid off was spoken to in person, which personally I think is the only way it should be done.

oh that happens a lot.. people getting laid off by phone. I got laid off by phone. We had a big team meeting and we were told that the company is downsizing and majority of us would be losing our jobs. So if you get a phone call or an email, know that you are no longer required to return to work..! I did get the call and never saw my boss again (didn't get along with her anyway)...

I had a job several years ago working in a place that built bimini tops and hand rails for boats. It was a locally owned place. The pay was decent, and the work really wasn't that hard. They laid us off about three weeks before Christmas. We went back to work right after New Years. We worked less than two weeks. They came to us right before lunch one day and told us that we were being laid off again, and that they didn't know how long the lay-offs would last this time. When I left that day, I took all my tools and stuff with me. I told them I would not be coming back, because I needed a job that was a little more dependable than what they were apparently able to offer. I don't think they ever re-opened. I don't know, because I never went back out there.

I fortunately have not, and my heart goes out to all the people who are going through that experience now. It must be awful, because I believe it’s not only the money (although it plays a very important role), but as well the fact that we tend to identify ourselves with the job we hold. The only thing I can say is that I hope that they find the strength to go through this experience.

I was once working at a pizza place. I was joking around with a assistant manager who was not too much older then me. She was even laughing alone. Next day I was reported by her. I did care but I was like oh well. I was even planning to quit because they were only working me one day a week for two hours. Well they fired me the next day. I even told the manager its okay I was going to quit anyway.

I haven't persoannly, but I've known a lot of people who have, including my husband. I have an equal problem though... I just can't find and get a job to save my life. I must be the plague when it comes to interviews. i have been out of work for over a year and I actually have good work history and experience. I decided to return to college and quit my job because they were only open first shift. Now, I can't even get a waitressing job.

Yes that actually happened to me once. It was a few years when I was like 20 years old. I was working for H&M and I really hated the job and the people but I felt trapped there until I could get something else, but ON TOP of that, I was trapped in a false marriage as well and that was making my depression 10x worse. So the whole depression thing had an effect on my attendance and I guess they picked up on it and let me go. It's cool though, I had gotten a new job 2 months later.

That really is sux! Clearly the company must know she's on a vacation. Can't they find a better time to tell her? What a way to spend holiday. Your case was sux too. During shopping?! Why can these companies waited until you guys when to work and then call into the office like they used to? I never been laid off my previous jobs. That's because I quit first. Not all my previous sux to, I just find a better offers.

Yes once after working for the company for 25 years all due to 9/11. I would still be working in the WTC today if it wasn't for the madman Osama bid Laden.

Ive been layed off my last 2 jobs. First one, after working for 10 yrs I was called into the office and told they were downsizing. Just bought our first house that yr. I went home and cried. 2 mths later I got a better job, more pay and wondered why I even stayed at that old job lol. Then just recently after working 9 yrs at that better paying job, we were brought into the lunch room and told they were shutting the place down. This just before Christmas! I took it with a grain of salt. Thinking, something better will come along, not the end of the world. Well, today I started my first day of school. I dont know where it will lead me, but I know I will be okay and come January I will hopefully have a new job that will be my last one!!! I want to retire lol
