What is the future of the multi core processors?

Few years back we couldn't imagine of the days when we will be using multi core processors. But now, it's like a major competition between major industries like Intel and AMD - who can make more and more powerful multi core processors. Intel introduced Pentium D, then came AMD x2 which was followed by Core2Duo and now we are having a fight on who can make powerful Quad Core processors - Intel Core2Quad or AMD Phenom? So what is the future of multi core processors? I read about a recent research that after putting in 8 cores, if you increase any more core in the processor, the performance starts to decline exponentially. So I was wondering, will Intel and AMD find something out to prove this wrong and will eventually release say 32core processors for performance or will they simply use these higher core processors for more marketing and earning money while the performance will simply decrease?

Friends as long as know that may be the processors are working at giga hertz but still the mother board are not able to transfer data in such high speed. So many scientist are trying to develop a mother board with optical data flow network. Which will make the data flow in giga hertz . So imagine by that time how fast would b our systems.

Maybe more than that, what is the future of the OS with the new hardawre? The last tech is rubbish if the OS is not adapted to work with it.
