neither of my daughters really liked cake when they were growing up, so instead of having the typical birthday cake, we had cupcakes or ice cream sundaes, so i like the idea of individual servings instead of a cake. maybe brownies that they can decorate themselves.

Hey that's a great idea.....apart from the individual servings you also have the option of having a variety....

I would love to eat pastries at any time rather than a cake, but in B'day parties I prefer cakes, because it gives me a happy feeling to cut the cake with people singing the B'day song.Although its hard to cut pieces of cake properly in right sizes and all but ,I prefer the cake!!!

For a birthday it all depends on the individual. For myself personally I would rather have individual pastries...the kind I like. Yummy now I want pastries. But typically the kids in the family we have cake and ice cream because everyone tends to come. Hmmm now I want cake and ice cream. LOL :)

Well for big parties I think cake is the best thing. But if it is just a small family celebration then I think that what ever the birthday person loves most is fine. My husband likes chocolate cream pie, so there have been some birthdays of his in the past where I got him a chocolate cream pie instead of a cake, and that made him very happy.

I'd still go for cakes because I can really feel that it was my birthday whenever I blow the birthday candle. It has been a tradition for us so i will feel strange if ever i will replace cake for a pastry even if i celebrate it with my own family.
I am not a typical party girl. I am simple when celebrating my birthday and it is only for close family and friends. But now that i am married, i do celebrate my birthday with hubby and i still do the traditional birthday cake and blow the candle.
I like pastries, specially if it is proudly Philippine made, lolz. But i like pastries served for snacks when we have visitors at home. But now that i am in a foreign land, i don't know what their pastry will be like, because i got used of eating native delicacies and pastries made only in my country.

For a birthday i would definitely prefer a cake........i guess it has now become customary at my place to cut a cake during birthdays......yes pastries as an individual servings to the guests seems a viable option but not other wise......i would still go for a cake for birthdays no matter what.......
