myLotters don't like replying to intelligent discussions

I was looking for intelligent discussions here in myLot. I found some, but what I saw made me feel bad because these intelligent discussions hardly get any response. Why don't people here like intelligent discussions? It's just so sad that many people can reply to trivial discussions but won't give the time to think and participate in intelligent ones.

I think the short answer is simply that they are harder. You can rattle off four lines about what you like on your burger/how you like your steak cooked/what do you do when you get up practically in your sleep. But the more thought provoking questions take a little bit of thinking and effort so they don't have the same 'instant gratification' appeal as the easy ones. I think another reason is that the intelligent ones are also quite intimidating sometimes and people will worry about saying the wrong things. I think I'm even guilty of that, I stay away from most controversial topics and most of the discussions I do reply to tend to be rather fluffy.

I think some people are very much intimidated by those discussions. A lot of people feel that if they are not extremely knowledgable they'll come off sounding stupid. I respond to what I can and give any advice that I possibly can. Us MyLotters should try our best, no one is smarter than the other :)

I agree with cchitnarain's observation, that to a certain extent, there is a fear factor involved. If people find they are inadequate to attempt certain "challenging" topics due to lack of confidence, knowledge or writing skills to put together a credible set of pointers, then they probably won't attempt those discussions, and go for the simpler more trivial ones. No one wants to really risk coming across as being stupid or inferior, since he/she has a choice of what discussions to tackle.

I think you're right. Some people want to keep a good image. Sometimes I feel bad when others think that what I'm saying is dumb, but I get over it by telling myself that I would never learn if I don't voice out my opinion and find out what others think about it.

I don't know how much is not knowing enough about the subject, as mentioned above Or how much is fear of ridicule over your ideals, if it is a political/religious question. Or how much of it is an attempt to find lighter, more fun, conversations after a busy and hectic day. Or how much of it is simply that we are not all that intelligent here on Mylot. Judging by my rambling and sentence structure, I usually fall in the latter group. By the way, is this one of the intelligent questions or one of the trivial discussions?

I guess it's just one of the trivial ones. It's just pretty much an observation here.

That’s because myLot is a reflection of the real world. How many intelligent discussions have you had lately at home or work? They are usually far and apart, most of what people talk about, sad to say, are trivia, t.v. programs, the latest gossip. So, as in the real world, I look hard until I find something that stimulates me. I have the privilege of being a teacher, I teach freelance German and English, and, particularly with the advanced students I do a lot of conversation in the respective language – and it’s just a treat. Happy myLoting!

Hello pillusch. It's really sad but true. People nowadays are more concerned about trivialities. The world has forgotten how incredibly rich and amazing life is.

I know for me, I reply to discussions I feel like I can make a positive contribution too. There are somethings I just don't know a lot about and replying to those types of discussion might not really add to them, ya know? Although I know what you mean. Maybe start some yourself, and see what type of responses you get.

You're probably right. Maybe mylotters feel that they can't contribute much to these discussions, seeing as some discussions require knowledge and expertise.

Me too! I try to reply to things that I know I can right more than 1 line about. And that I can reply intelligently to.

The reason people don't do that is because they want money, all they want to do is say "wow that's cool, blah blah blah blah blah" and get paid 1 cent to do it so they can pay for something online. Nobody wants to have intellectual discussions here, they want their post to be short sweet and to the point. Speaking of that, I saw somebody here with over 10k+ posts and he could barely construct a sentence. You can pay people to post but the post wont be good, that's all I have to say. P.S.: If you want to have a really good discussion come to Philosophy on your interests. That's a fun spot.

I didn't think about that. It is a very plausible explaination i guess. People choose quantity over quality since they are paid for the number of post not for their quality.

Hello angelajoy I agree with you about that , When I first joined mylot I posted few discussions which were informative about specific thing , but I found no participation !! I really felt bad , then when I watched the list of hot discussions I felt more bad , the hot topics were silly ones , but they still gain more comments than what I could dream of for my discussion .

I know what you mean. It can be discouraging, when you put in time and effort, after doing some research, to put in a thought-provoking and challenging topic, only to find that most people shun responding to you. Others start a discussion on "what's your favorite food" or "how many times you brush you teeth a day", and they get a ton of responses. The sad truth is that many people opt for the easy way out, and look for discussions which are easy to tackle so they can chalk up the statistics and earnings. For me I try and participate in all kinds of discussions, as long as I feel I can contribute something and add value to the discussion. Quite a number of these topics, I even have to do research, to ensure I get my facts rights before I pen my answers and opinions. But I hope more quality discussions get the responses they deserve.

Well everyone's ideas of an intelligent discussion is different, and a lot of the so called intelligent discussions are to serious for me and they only keep trouble brewing, for example I recently responded to a topic in witch I felt was interesting and intelligent and so I decided to post an answer on to the discussion even though my instincts told me to avoid it becuse of the serious subject matter, but against my better judgement I answered it anyway and of course it become a bit heated and other posters were angry at other members responses, thats one of the reasons Iv become very selective when it comes to answering certain topics becuse some of the more thought provoking topics tend to get deleted due to angry or heated responds, so I prefer responding to a slightly lighter topic though on rare occasions I have made exceptions.

i love those kids of discussions but when i look to my email and get the daily mylot i only see the same kind of discussions being talked about. sometimes i don't have time to come in the site and see the other discussions being talked about. i miss them but its not by choice its by timing and the fact i may not be aware of such discussions taking place i can sink my finger to keyboard too. the last discussion that was intelligent i replied to was with women choosing to not be involved with any man and being single. i got no replies to my response and it was like the discussion was over even though i was one of 3 men that responded with something to say. sometimes these topics are missed and or people overlook it for their own personal reasons. i joined here to be involved.

Sad to hear that. Probably most people here can't find the discussion related to them or they can't answer the question so they have to skip it. For me, if i know something and I can be of help towards that discussion, i certainly will participate. I don't know why most crazy discussions here were really opt for most. But i think it comes with who's online too. Sometimes when we go back online, that certain topic will be gone and some don't know how to retrieve it back. So we can't blame if our topic has been put back to the fridge, lolz and nobody cares to answer it anymore. I can still remember that when i first came to Mylot, there are lots of good writers participating in every discussion. Now you can count who's the veterans here and well respected.

I dont think its because mylotters dont want to repsonde to "intelligent" discussions its just sometimes easier and faster to respond to the discussions you dont have to think about rather than the ones you have to think for a minute as to what your opinion is.

Hi,, For intelligent discussion, there should not be ideal minds to sit on computer and join chat websites, so adapt it!

I think it all depends on what you call an intelligent discussion. I have seen some as well, that I didn't think much of, but I just skip them anyway. One discussion I started yesterday, gave me 20 responses, which really surprise me as I didn't exppect my discussion to get that much feedback. I considered it an itelligent question so I asked it, and you know, the answers were intelligent too. There are some discussions like one person said that are worthless, but those I have nothing to do with either. That person even considered mine worthless, but 20 other people didn't think so. I am glad I got responses to it, as it kept me busy commenting on the discussion. Well, good luck to you and happy mylotting.

As someone said the sum of intelligence on earth is a constant. Population is rising. By the way i've noticed the same thing a lot of people reply to trivial discussion while the most interesting are neglected by almost everyone.
