our dog just recently have delivered 6 cute little puppies but since we cant keep all of them my mom planned to give 5 of them away to our relatives now I am planning to keep one. Now for me to decide well I need your help on this which is good to keep a male dog or a female dog. And what are the disadvantages and advantages of selecting either a male or a female dog. Really need your advice coz I cant decide which. Thanks in advance.

A female dog may arguably have a better temperament overall, but a male dog will be less expensive to sterilize if you were looking to do this. Even if you didn't want to desex your dog, you won't ever have to worry about puppies with a male dog either! lol.

I believe the more common term is "neuter" Remove their ability to reproduce. It saves on having the babies, and usually creates more docility in the animal.

I have had both male and female dogs in my lifetime. I don't see a difference. Its the way the owner trains them that makes their personality and temperment. All the dogs that I ever had were always very gentle and loveable. No matter if the dog was male or female I always had them neutered.

I do believe that as well my friend the one that I choose will be trained by me and I would make everything special on this dog. If he or she would turn out to be good then I would let him sleep on my room.

Hi Dan! That is a tough question. Both are great. Only problem you could have is with a female. She gets her problem, and male dogs get her pregnant. If you don't want that kind of hassle, then I would suggest a male dog. But, if you are the caring kind, a female would be great too. Maybe you should keep two, a female and a male??? Take care. Have a nice day!

First whatever you have should be desexed to prevent breeding. Millions of healthy animals are put to sleep every year due to lack of homes. I know spaying and neutering is expensive, but it's a one time expense and part of responsible pet ownership. I prefer females because they don't have a need to mark everything by lifting their leg. The marking behavior is really annoying.

yeah you are right I will have to desexed them if thats the term and know what I have selected already and its a female puppy since she is the first to bark at me and she got my attention, so I am keeping her she is the most loveliest among them all her color is black and every time i go out she barks as if missing me

Well for me it's better if keep a male dog...because if you'll keep a female dog in time she'll deliver puppies too and that'll be your problem again..male dog is better because they are good house guards and they are more attentive and cuddly..

yeah that too is my concern I have one male and one female dog already so adding one more male would lower the risk of having lots of puppies again. And yes they have been a good house guards so far

I have always like a male dog, yet I have owned female dogs also. I found the females to be more intelligent and learned things like walking on a lead a lot faster than the males. But of course you have to watch them at certain times and keep them indoors, away from male dogs if you don't want them to have puppies. If you do want them to have puppies, perhaps for selling, then this is one thing you can do with a female dog that you can't do with a male dog. Male dogs like to rule the household and have to be taught that they are not the "leader of the pack". Good luck with your choice.. - Derek

Well, when the right dog appears in front of you, it will be love at first sight and it won't matter if it is male of female. Females are not too bad at keeping away from males, and you can always get them sterilised by the vet. - Derek

If you already have one female that is not fixed then i would say another female would be good. I personally do not like male dogs in the house. Having unfixed animals would be hard keeping the male and female separate. I Have 3 manx cats (no tails) i let Miss Kity have kittens and kept 2 kittens that also didnt have tails. One male and one female. I fixed the male so i dont have to worry about inbreeding. He also doesnt have the skunky urine.

I for sure would say pick a female. Sometime males dont get along with each other very well. Good luck choosing.

I have 1 male and 1 female dog already and planned to have 1 more but dont know which one I would keep since there are 6 to chose. Well I do believe that the one who will show certain affection to me is the one who will stay. In a couple of days of observing then I would choose which one.

this really isn't a choice. 1st pick the puppy that u like the most in the litter, and the 1 that likes u the same way. People will pick alot of this and that but in the end it really is how much u will give to each other.. I had to do the same thing,we chose a female puppy that luvs us both so much and we luv her.. We have Bouviers... REMEMBER ALWAYS LUV YOUR DOG/ PET THEY WILL ALWAYS LUV U

I think female dogs tend to be more protective of their owner. They are also more docile and don't hike up their legs and pee on stuff all the time. I like older male dogs, but when it comes to puppies that are going to grow up around you female dogs are better. It was a female dog that helped me get over my childhood fear of dogs, though. So, I could be a little biased.

I suggest you to choose the male HelScream... I can't describe you about the disadvantages and advantages of that. What i know is, if you choose the female, well i guess she will delivered 6 cute little puppies again someday. Looks like you have to choose again whats to keep if thats happen.

hello my friend well you have a point and you made me laugh well it might happen but friends here have suggestions that can prevent that thing from happening so it would be likely easy for me to choose now and not to worry if I will have more puppies in the future

On the boys more difficult to walk, they should be sure to "mark" territory. Do girls every year, critical days, and they besmirch the house.

well i dont have problems about the exercise of the dogs since I will just let them out then they would just walk with me or run with me thats the usual thing they do when we go out of the house.

Oh. it's very cute to see 6 puppies just have been borned, sure you can't keep them all, but even if you are trying to keep one in the house. First one must think if you are able to keep him, if you are ready to feed him, cleaning and one must keep in mind that a dog is not just a soft toy, you have to take him out for a walk at least 45minutes a day. So if you are able to take care of him. Why not. Good day friend.

I have always been told that a female dog is the best to have around because it will protect its home better and is less likely to attempt to run off. A male dog is more likely to smell a female in heat from a far and try to find her, thus; not always protecting his home as he should. On the other hand, if you have a male dog, he can't have puppies. I guess the best advice I can give you it to not worry so much about gender as you do which puppy that you seem to connect with the most. If there is one in particular that you seem to always want to hold or show attention over the others, choose that one reguardless of its gender.

I am a woman, I select a male dog as my pet, I chose a male dog just because I think a male dog is easier to train, I don't have proofs but it is only what I believe in. I talked with a friend just few days ago, she told me a female dog obeys her owner more than a male dog does, and she said that as she has had so many dogs before. If you want a dog who cares about you and follows you every steps, I think a female dog is good to consider. I don't know if a male dog is suitable for you, my male pug is so lovely and think I chose it right.

Well you know I already have 1 male dog and 1 female dog but the one who is always following me around is the male dog. If he doesnt see me for 1 day when I come back he would jump into me and acts like he really missed me.But our female dog just dont even go near me at all thats why I like male dog better, but I like one puppy that stands out among them but its a she thats why I want all your opinion on this. thanks for adding more information on this thanks.

can't you just keep them all?aww..if it's me I'll choose the male dog.I am a girl, and I think a male dog will be more protective of me than a female dog.I don't say a female dog is not protective, but with them you have to worry a lot especially if you don't want to have more puppies.speaking of that can I have a puppy?

Okay, since your female dog has offspring I have to assume you have a male dog too. Correct me if i'm wrong. If you have a male dog already - the father of those puppies, and you keep a male puppy, once it grows they'll compete for power and territory, you'll have a huge headache trying to keep them from fighting coz they're both male, unless you castrate both of them. If you'll keep another female puppy, the mom and the puppy will both reproduce in less than a year that means your mother will be obliged to give away more puppies than usual. Its alot expensive too, coz the maintenance of food for there are more mouths to feed by then. Option A for me is best if you're going to castrate both male so reproduction will be avoided. This is just me of course.

It's just depend on you how to see the advantage and disadvantage.if you keep female one, you may face the same question like now, it may have more and more puppies in future. If you don't mind, you will keep female dog, I always feel that they are very sweet.
