I think it could still be celebrated. I was thinking about this same question earlier. My father is currently on his last leg, suffering from severe emphysema. I guess you would just carry the memory on. Obviously, you think about your father all the time. There are probably countless things in life that bring his memory to the front of your mind. So, you wouldn't have to celebrate the day just to have a "reason" to pay homage to your father. However, it does make a great occassion to actually let every one of those memories come back. To celebrate it, not so much as a celebration but as a day of paying respects, I think would be very appropriate. I know this analogy isn't overly fitting, but you could liken it to a non-Christian who celebrates Christmas or Easter. They aren't religious, but the holidays are there for people to make the best of. Whether you really "fit" or not, you kinda just let your hair down and celebrate it if you want -- nobody's excluded. Maybe you have other family that would like to get together and possibly have a barbeque or an informal dinner of some sorts to just, I don't know... make the most out of the day. :-)

hello there matersfish.... thank you that nice comment.. thank you for saying that nobody os excluded to celebrate fathers day with or with out a father.. that really makes me happy.... hmm.... maybe i will try to treat my mother or go on a date with her, because she is a father and mother at the same time.... hmm... date? that just reminds me of my father..though they wee old they would set a day when they would go out for a date and me and my brother would just be staying with relatives for a couple of hours.they always have quality time together. i think that what makes their relationship sweeter.... thank you again..have a nice day...

Is your mother still around? If so, then perhaps you can buy something for her since she is both mother and father now...My mother passed away many years ago so everytime on Mother's day, I buy my father something since he was both mom and dad to me growing up.....So he gets presents on mothers day and fathers day...Lucky Man!

You have a very good idea there, eh. :) I know your mother will even be more happy to see that you are appreciating your father more now that she is gone. I think the same is true with the rest here. If you lose a parent, treasure the one who is present because this person as assumed two responsibilities.

Yes - in situations where one parent is no longer alive or around, it's best to make the other parent feel as appreciated as possible....

Hi, bhabytart! I do think of my late father. My husband, though, is my focus. He's been my best friend since we were very young, so he gets me through all the tough times, and there are a lot of those. I think of him as the father of my life, whereas my dad was the father of my birth.

Hi! I know and appreciate the respect shown by calling me ma'am, but it makes me feel like some sort of endangered species! I'm Joanne! School starts up again during the last week in August. I LOVE being on vacation. U usually teach summer school, but budget cuts put an end to summer school this year.

Nice thought you have there! yes, indeed father's day will be next sunday. How do we celebrate father's day when you don't have a father mmm... Well i've never seen my father since i was born and i don't really have an idea what's a father like. But with God's blessings i've found him thru the net 5 years ago, can't be with him though. He is in Maryland, while i am in the Philippines. We only get in touch thru letters and phone at times. The important thing is, i guess, to greet him and let him know i care! And that i still have the chance to let him know that i am here for him!

Me and my children have no more fathers to celebrate with. They're both resting in peace. All we do is saying prayers for them and visiting their tombs. Though we feel sad but we do rejoice believing they are in the better place, celebrating with our real father, our Lord God, our creator. We also prepare food for the family on this special occassion.

Just go to the cemetery and greet you father a "Happy father's day". Your dad would be sad if he see you crying. Bring him a flowers, and candle. And say some prayer for his soul.

I might attend mass and pray for him. This is my first Father's day without my father. It's going to be a sad one, knowing that we'll all miss him. But ofcourse, in honor of my father, we'll still celebrate it... by having dinner.

I understand how you feel. I can feel how much you love your father and sadly, he is not with you anymore. Try to think that he is in a better position now with God and he is just there looking at you and making sure that you are all in well. Happy fathers day to all fathers here in myLot.!!!

hi there, both of my pot parents are gone, so not only fathers day but also mothers days celebration both make me cry. But i do still celebrate it just by being thankful for what ny dad have done for me and for the whole family, i cherished the times He was with us, and keep Him proud for what i become, He is a part of me even he is not here physically, but in my heart where He will be forever. I have the highest regard to all fathers because of my dad, their sacrifices and their selfless attitude. But the best father of them all is God, who gave us our fathers and keep us going even when theyre gone. So fathers day is a memory lane for me to still celebrate my dad and all the other fathers in the world who love their families.

I will think of him and remember the long walks and talks we shared. In previous years, I have planted bulbs or seeds in my garden with him in mind. This year, I will be working the early shift so will be leaving home at the sort of time we used to walk. I will be appreciating the birdsong and the colours of nature just a bit more thinking of how much he enjoyed those things. I hope you will be able to find comfort in happy memories. Take care

hello there wizzywig..... yes happy memories makes me smile. I also have long walks and talks with my father... i can still remember when i told him that somebody wants to court me when i was in high school.. he said it is up to me to decide. but i said to my father, i will answer that guy if he has the guts to talk to you(my father) and he laugh...... then he knows what i mean. then he said i think what you are trying to say is that you ae not yet ready for a relationship. and we both laugh!!! thank you for the comment. have nice day.

I have encountered a couple of similar discussions with the same idea, however, they are not as sad as this post. The two other myLot members simply shared that they miss their lost fathers and that for Father's Day, they go to the cemetery to visit their fathers' graves. I believe that this is a good gesture that might help you feel better as well. Thanks for the response on my discussion :)

Well, firstly im very sorry to hear you have lost your father. Im not in your situation yet. The only thing i can suggest is rather than spending time on fathers day feeling just sad about your father, why dont you try to think of some happy memories? And try and be happy. Maybe try to think of nice things you did with him, and maybe do some of them yourself. I dont know if that would help, maybe not. Its just an idea, what a lot of people have said to me. Hope this was some help!
