i was just thinking about this.. it seems like everyone blames 9/11/01 for all of our problems money/economy/etc wise in america but do you think if we hadnt had that tragic day we would be better off today or still be in the same mess because people and companies didnt manage their money correctly? obviously some of us and businesses were affected badly without it being our fault (lay offs etc) but do you think we would have gone down hill as quick or at all? or just a matter of time and people wanting to associate it with something that makes it "not our fault"?

Yes! I think it definitely has something to do with it. I mean, think about it! How many trillions of dollars have we spent overseas fighting the "war on terror"? Many, many, many. I think 9/11 definitely sparked our "war-on-terror"-craze; which wasn't cheap. I don't know if that crashed the economy or not - but we certainly wasted a lot of money that we didn't even have to begin with - on it. I don't really know much about politics or the economy..But it's obvious that at least the "war on terror" took a ginormous toll on our country's finances.

It had a lot more to do with the crooked business practices that have developed over the years then 9/11. The whole banking fiasco isn't connected at all. It's just people being way too greedy & not realizing that their greed is actually making what they have worth less.

I think it would have happened anyway.....there have been many poor decisions made many years ago that started all of this...and we did need this to happen to pull everything back in. Many were living off credit cards and having a free for all with plastic......now they have to fess up to what they have been doing.....even the big dog and rats that have come out of the woodwork...things will change around...and the stock market will recover as it goes in a seven year cycle anyway...but I do think 9/11 helped it along....speeded up the process.

Perhaps 9/11 does have a substantial role in our economy. I also think Katrina and some of the other natural disasters largely contributed to the shape of today's economy. Also, it's good to help other countries and all, but we have many people in our own country that need help, and we have a huge deficit, which I think dictates we shouldn't be dishing out money all over the world that we don't have. I don't mean to sound cruel saying that, but I think our country would be better off if we cut back some of the spending we do...

i agree.. i think our country needs to make sure our countries people are ok before we help other people.. i mean how can you really help others when you cant help yourself anyways?!?!

Hi Moon...I believe it is always going to be pointing the finger at something so we don't place the blame on our government where it should be going. the catastrophic day of 9/11 put a big mar on the morale of our country, but as far as it being the blame for our economy now I just don't think that it is. We have been headed for this meltdown for many years and I don't think we can really place the blame on anyone othr than the ones running our government and making bad decisions. flutterby

I think even if the 9/11 terrorist attack did not happened, america would still be in the same economic turmoil that it is experiencing right now. this is because the crisis that US is currently facing originated from a different source--the subprime mortgage market. Though US economy started to slowdown after the 9/11 attack. The current US economic crisis, which already spreads in the whole world, is mainly due to loose credit lending and borrowing practices and high-risk mortgage loans i.e. Ninja Loans ("No Income, No Job and no Assets" loans. But instead of blaming each other, Americans should unite and help each other in battling this contagious crisis.

i think in the long run it will be a good lesson (i know that sounds horrible since people are losing their homes and etc but i dont mean it to be) as far as that we need to be more responsible in spending and every other aspect of our lives

Personally I think that 9/11/01 does play a partical role in our economy. I dont think it would have gone down hill as quickly though. I think that everyone uses 9/11 as an excuse but I do think it's part of the problem. It brought on another "war" that America didnt need and couldnt afford.

I was watching a movie last night that was based on a true story, and it was set in the mid to late 70's. It seemed life back then was as bad as it is now. People were losing their jobs, everyone was on strike, people were hurting. Who's fault was that? Was there a 9/11 back then? You ever seen Persuit of Happyness? It was the same type of economy then, people were hurting and couldn't make rent. Prices were rising like crazy. There wasn't a 9/11 then. Business have always been hurting, some more so than others. Families have always been hurting, some more so than others. Gas prices have been rising all along, just now they're rising faster. I don't think anyone or anything is to blame, I think it's just natural. These things happen. We get into slumps, eventually we sort of get used to it and life as we know it becomes the norm. A few years later we notice maybe the economy is getting worse again, we call it another recession. That's my take on it anyways. I don't know all the facts, I'm not an expert (I'm sure there are dozens of people here who can point out examples as to why my theory is wrong). But this is what I choose to believe.

yeah i think everything goes in cycles.. i havent seen that movie (i dont think) but seems like the media liked to blame 9/11 and i wasnt alive in the 70s and didnt pay attention to stuff like this while i was growing up so it may just be ignorance on my end

I think it would still have happened. I can see how some people can blame the "war" for what is happening, but i believed the "war" would of happened if 9/11 happened or not. Besides society has become wasteful and its something that was going to happen anyways. We also look to blame other things rather then accept that hey it of been something i have done, ya know??

I think that a lot of money was dedicated to homeland security and the war efforts that may have been avoided if 9/11 hadn't happened. I suppose it would have just prolonged it though, the greed and corruption would still be there, I think it just was uncovered because of 9/11.
