I think so...I feel that the more you read the more open you become in your thinking. We tend to view things differently as we gain more knowledge about people, places and man's behavior. It may be any kind of book, a fiction, non fiction or books on other subjects. They all contribute in increasing our awareness of people and society because all books are an extension of the author's experience, knowledge coupled with imagination. If we are able to take it as it is meant to be we gain a lot by reading. These are my feelings.
One, ofcourse needs to be careful while selecting books as a lot of unwanted stuff too is available which may not give any positive benefits - but generally speaking I tend to feel that books make you broad minded as well as knowledgeable
Friends what do you all think about this? Please do share your views here ..

I do think reading makes you more open minded. No matter what you read. Whether you agree with the story line or facts, reading gives you a different perspective on any subject matter. And you can keep your opinion the same when you are done, but you become more open minded by seeing the other views and at least accepting them. Believe it or not, I think fiction is good with this, because it is usually someone's spin on facts or an idea. It may give you a perpective that you hadn't thought of before. Non-Fiction definetley makes you more knowledgeable, however, it an expand your mind, simply by making you aware of issues you previously unaware of. I don't read much non-fiction any more, but would love some recommendations.

Hi amybrezik,Thank you so much for your response
, you have given some interesting view points. I agree that one can never be rigid in one's views. It is always better to be more adaptable and see things from other's point of view as well...I too have not read many non-fiction, the recent one that really made a great impact on me was 'Freakonomiks by Steven Levitt' and 'Mind Power: How to Use Positive Thinking to Change Your Life - Christian Godefroy'...all the best and happy mylotting![](/Content/images/emotes/thumbup.gif)

Hiya Kiran,
This is so true. I think that reading books or any text at all, like say in the net, gives a good and well-rounded and in-depth knowledge on certain things. Like if I read up on travel, I find my travel knowledge especially increasing and I can answer travel questions from others better.
When on days that I suffer burnouts from writing, I find reading the best form of relaxation ever. It gives a very good thing or vibe for me, and for those who doesn't like to read, I think they are missing out a bit. But there are those that love to read information and knowledge magazines. That is cool too.

It does somewhat depend on what kind of books you read. If you read nothing but UFO books, you're not going to become as knowledgeable and broad minded as if you read all different sorts of books.
I tend to have rather a narrow focus. The majority of books I read are either Science Fiction or Fantasy, but I have been expanding my horizons lately.

Hi dawnald, Thanks a lot for your response
I think you have answered it rather well...It is better to read books on all kinds of subjects rather than restrict oneself, and I feel that any reading or even restrictive reading is better than no reading..

Reading is a way of learning about anything you like.It extends your vocabulary and improves your use of grammer. There is nothing like a good book to take you away from everyday worries and life. You can get lost in a world of fantasy or fact what ever floats your boat.I used to sit with all my little ones as soon as they opened their eyes with a big picture book and read to them, as they got older they ran their fingers over the pages and laughed if you bring them up to have fun with books and enjoy themselves they should read well when older. It also gives you some ideas if you want to write your own stories, not copy of course but develop a style of your own.

Hi suzzy,I totally agree with your views . Yes reading is such a fantastic hobby to cultivate. There were many doubts among people whether Computers would take over and bring down the demand for books, but I personally feel that once a person has developed the reading habit nothing can take it away. Another thing I have noticed is that it is hereditary...If the parents or at least one of the parent is fond of books and reading, he/she automatically pass on this habit to their children and others around them as well...

Hi there kiran. Just like you, I truly believe that reading can make a person become forward-thinking. i guess one cause why people tend to easily prejudge others is because of lack of reading. If one can only give time to read books, then it can help increase his awareness. Blessings!^^

Reading lets you use your mind and keeps it active and engaged. I find that reading often makes me look at things differently or look at people in a different light. I have been reading several books by Jeff Schara on WWII and have a totally different concept of General Eisenhower. He has as much fighting with his generals as he did with the Germans. That really opened my eyes.

Reading books ofcourse gives you knowledge for something and it even makes you smart. Personally i dont really love reading books but i regret it for not doing so. I know many people who love to read and they are really good and smart. I have a daughter and i will pursue her to read while she was growing because i believe that reading will gives you knowledge.

yes, agree. books never fail to teach us a life lesson or two. the characters in books are different people or entities that have different views and outlooks in life. we tend to relate to them or connect to them one way or another.i used to read a lot of books but due to my busy sked these days, i always forget to open a book. the books in the house is accumulating, i better have time to read all of them. aside from knowledge, books make us better and rational thinkers. books has many benefits, those are just some of them. :)

Hi!I agree with your views totally.
My favorite is reading in my spare of time.no matter reading books or reading on computers. In my opinion, there is no one that born with intelligent or a borden horizen. We are all same at first when we came to this world, what is different is that we go through different things and have different experiences in our life time,so that is what course we have different views toward one thing.
Reading books can take me to many places around the world and learn something about the customs or culture in those local places.Maybe I can't go to many places to visit for myself but I can read book related to these places.
No doubt there are so many kinds of books today,so be wise when we are in the face of select what books we will read. From my point of view, there are not good books or bad books. There only have books useful for certain people. So if you choose a book which is match your interest or of great use to you, this book can be regarded as a good book.So do wise when select a book.A good book can bring many benifits to you.

Hi etomaggie, welcome to mylot and thanks a lot for your response
..I disagree that we are all born the same, there is the hereditary factor and genes which determines a person's characteristics including intelligence. But environment and upbringing also has a great role to play in building up a personality.
Yes books are all useful, what is important is how we are going to utilise the knowledge that is on those pages...All the best and happy mylotting![](/Content/images/emotes/thumbup.gif)

I do agree but once you are reading almost anything. A lot of people tend to pick books that are of interest to them. Your also right about being careful about picking books, but isn't it better to know the unwanted information, proccess it, and understand the difference between the good stuff and the bad stuff?

Hi cchitnarain, Thanks alot for your response. I feel that there is some message evn in the worst of books. At the same time it is difficult to draw a line between what is a good book and what isn't. People have different view points and what is good to me may be bad to someone, so it depends on the individual to select what he wants to read instead of censoring...I personally prefer to be open about it..

Oh yes, definitely. It improves your stock knowledge, hence, broadens your mind. If your reading skills are poor, then it is likely that you are at risk to social exclusion. You interact in many ways. One of them is sharing your knowledge based on experience and reading. Reading is an integral part of learning. It encourages intellectual development affecting your personal development by self-awareness and self-control.

I like reading very much especially philosophy and management. Reading will makes us broad minded in the condition of you can rethink defferent views from author's experience. Each time when I reading a new book,I can feel the chagllenge from the author. They always challenge your belief,views,understanding,etc..It make you rethink your life. That is best experience for me while reading.

Hi balasri, As you say there is a lot to be gained by reading. It definitely adds to your knowledge no matter what you read. Selective reading further helps in building up your knowledge and become much more capable of assessing and judging which is what being broadminded is all about...at least to me broadminded means being capable of making the right judgment about others without being biased

You are right, reading is a powerful tool if you want to have more knowledge. I think it is next to experience. It also makes our imagination crazy which most of the time is a good thing, because you can make new ideas, think of something to do that can be productive to yourself or to others.

Hi antisociality, Reading is a very powerful means of communication. the author communicating with all his readers . It can definitely be a positive influence on people. the more you read the more ideas you get. Reading all the discussions here itself has benefited me a lot. I have learnt about a lot of new ideas and subjects here from other members..

It all depends what you read.
If you only read that which you agree with, and that doesn't challenge your ways of thinking, you will simply become more convinced of your existing way of thinking.
Don't treat reading purely as a means of supporting your own views; expect them to be challenged and light shone on new ideas.

Hi steelmoggy, thats an interesting observation and I agree with you. One tends to read books on subjects that interest us and unless you are open to new ideas you may not look beyond your own limited interests, but even within that limited field of choice , one can better oneself right?

Reading definitely enhances your life experience, whether it's fiction or non fiction. For example, historical novels are so well researched that it is easy to learn more about the past. You absorb stuff as you read, and, as you say, you learn more about the workings of the human mind and the human condition.
