The picture shows a plant of Lollo Rosso which is a colourful and good tasting leaf lettuce. I have been taking leaves from this plant regularly for 2 weeks and it just keeps producing more. It surprise me how many gardeners here are growing only this type of lettuce. I also have three other types that form lovely tight crisp hearts and really prefer them. What is your preference?.
I have been using a lot from my balcony and garden over the last few weeks. I also keep my neighbours well supplied with lettuce and spring onions. One of them looks after my balcony plants when I am not here which is quite often. Another works in a bakery and keeps me supplied with lovely fresh bread rolls and cakes in exchange for the fresh garden produce. Do you have an outlet for your surplus?

I think I am in the minority here, but I ONLY like Iceberg lettuce, all the other lettuces and salad leaves that I have tried taste yuck to me.
I envy you being able to grow fresh produce, I have absolutely nowhere to plant anything, not even room for pots. When I buy a house, I definitely want to have a vegie patch, because home grown produce is so far superior to what you but at the shops. I LOVE homegrown tomatoes - even just smelling the leaves while they are growing - but they taste divine :)

Hi ethereal,
Thanks for responding. When you say "iceberg" do you mean the actual "Iceberg " variety or hearting lettuce in general. There are many wonderful varieties of hearting lettuce. Sherwood and little Gem are two of the best. I grow also a "mini iceberg" which has really firm hearts about the size of a tennis ball.
My tomatoes are looking well. I have 13 plants on my balcony and 3 in my garden.
I too love the smell of tomato leaves, especially in a small green house after they have been sprayed.
