How do you keep your stockings in a good condition?

To all ladies, how do you keep your stockings in a good condition and keep it from running?

I don't wear stockings anymore but as a child it seemed that I was to put on my shoes right after putting on the stockings so as to keep from it running. I think that may help, but making sure they are the right size and are on comfortable should help too.
