You don't have to post to twitter to have a twitter account. I certainly rarely do. I have Facebook for letting people I know what I'm doing (at least, people I care to know.)
I use Twitter to follow people I find interesting. It's actually a great way to get updates on celebrities you follow, if you're into that. Personally I find comedians are the most rewarding to follow on Twitter, as they send out some pretty funny stuff. I have tweets sent directly to my phone, so it's very nice to read some posts during a break from school, work, what have you.
It's not for everyone, so don't feel forced to get into it.

Twitter operates on different concepts than Facebook. The idea is the same, you keep updated with your friends, but in a different style. There's no information about people aside from name and location. You don't list your hobbies, interests, anything like that, no applications. The idea is to just "follow" people via their tweets.
Facebook recently changed to operate similar to Twitter, so that may be why you are wondering "whats the point?" Consider Twitter to be Facebook's status updates, but that's it. That's the point. You get to know what people are up to, without having to deal with all the other stuff. In fact, most people who use Twitter do not use the website (twitter.com). They use it via some other 3rd party application, like iPhone/iPod touch applications, or like me, I use text messages to follow, tweet, and reply to people.

I do have a twitter account but really do not see what the big deal it is as I hardly ever use it I much prefer Facebook as I find I use that regularly.
To tell you the truth I do not know why I bothered to set up an account on Twitter in the first place I think it was just to try it out and see what it was like.

Hi leyisa, I do have a Twitter account but I am not crazy about it. Twitter is a sort of social bookmarking type of site, the only difference being you can tell the world (and certainly your friends) what are you doing and what are you upto. It is kinda a mix of social bookmarking and social networking site.
Here, you can use it for business use as well as for staying up-to-date with your friends. You have an option of writing tweets (short messages) about whatever you're upto. If it is for business purposes, your activity will generate the required attention and if used for social purposes your friends will get to know what you really are upto. Adding friends is called as followers i.e. anyone who follows you gets to see all the tweets that you submit on the site. Even you can follow your friends or some person who have something valuable to share with you.
You can follow me too.... My twitter id is 'rajeshfgh'
