I am so mad and upset! The disc where I saved my book totally messed up and now I can't access the file. This means that my book is gone, all 18 chapters of it. I'm hoping and praying that my one friend has a copy of it on her computer. If not, I'm screwed. The only thing that I have is five chapters of it in hard copy. If I can't access this file, at least I have that and can begin again. Has this happened to anyone else?

I did lose part of a novel when my computer went down and had to be repaired. What I usually do is email it to myself and keep the file in my email. Unfortunately, I didn't get the chance but it did save me trouble on other writing.

Funny you should say that because after I started this convo, I found that I had emailed it to myself! You must have ESP. I had also emailed it to a friend. My memory had apparently failed me. LOL. Thanks for the tip, though! If I hadn't remembered on my own, your post would have helped me out tremendously.

oh my god. it's terrible. i am so sorry for you. next time do a print of your book any couple of chapters you finish. so that you will have a real back up of the file. so that if you lose your book on the computer, you won't lose it. you'll have to rewrite it.
anyway that's why i always write by hand and only when i have finished my book, i write it on my computer.

Yes, i had that happen. I used the disc on one computer and saved it. When i went to another computer, it was unreadable. One disk i finally did manage to open, with the aid of still another computer and program.

I have had this happen. I saved it to my computer and my computer crashed and I lost all my files. I just read that you found you emails. Thats good. I will also remember that in the future when I try again. Good Luck.

First what kind of disc is it? CD disk, floppy disk (yea I know floppys are old news lol) if its just that the disc has a scratch on it you may try burning a new copy and seeing if your able to access it. If that dont work you may want to buy on of those nifty disc repair things you know it shaves the disc removing any scratches but leaves the info on the disc. Just an Idea. I hope that your friend has it on her computer as that would make me cry for hours. Good luck

It happened to me once a number of years ago. It's horrible, I know. I happened to have a very geeky friend who was able to recover some of it, but much was lost and I had to rewrite. I wish you luck on salvaging what you can, and on the rewrite that will most likely come.
