Let me ask you: "When do mice become rats?"
Last nice while I was alseep this really loud, eek eek squeak squeak came from the vacinity of my bedroom door. So stupid me I got up to go see what it was. Of course, I forgot to put on my glasses and didn't have a flashlight, so what was I gonna see? Nothing, exactly right.
The squeaking stopped and I went back to bed, where my 2 cats were sound alseep. I thought maybe I was hearing things.
A little later I hear really loud, eek! eek! squeak! squeak! squeak! and a thump thru the cat door leading into my bedroom. This time I'm freaking out!
Anything that's loud enough to thump thru my pet door and squeak has to be a rat!
I put on my glasses and I get up to go insearch of this creature. I can still it squeaking but I can't locate it.
And what are the cats doing. Sleeping on the bed. They do not move or pass go.
I thought cats were great mousers. What a joke! Both of my cats use to catch mice all the time. Maybe they are in retirement. Maybe they were afraid of the loud squeaking. Who knows but I didn't find the squeaker.
I go back to bed, again. First thing this morning I hear: crunch, crunch, gnaw, gnaw, and the nashing of little teeth. Now the thing is in my bedroom wall and no way to get at it.
I fuss at my husband. He says I find the hole and block it up. Which he is doing right now and I'm thinking; "If we block all the holes how is the thing suppose to get out of the house?"
So, I'll ask again, "When do mice become rats?"

Mice & rats are two different rodents. Size doesn't make a large mouse a rat. Rats have elongated pointier noses and a longer body compared to a mouse of similar size. Both can carry disease and do great damage to your home. If your cats are not going to catch the creature for you then you will need to set traps. Peanut butter makes a great bait. It can't easily be stolen from a trap. I wouldn't block up any holes on the walls untill you are sure the creature is caught but set traps near them. Is there a new construction project near you or a building being torn down? I can remember back in the late 60's early 70's we had some kind of project nearby that disturbed hundreds of mice... our neighborhood was overrun and you could see them scampering all over at night. For weeks we set traps that got 3-4 a night. All night long loud SNAP! and my dad making a trip tp the outside trash with trap and all. If you use killing type traps just toss the whole trap. Not ony do you NOT want to try to clean it, once a mouse has been killed in one the others are not likely to visit it. OH and use gloves when baiting and setting the traps... less human smell.
My brother taught his cat to catch mice by using a have a heart trap to get a live mouse. Shook it up enough to stun the mouse then let his cat have it to play with. The mouse eventually got away but the cat was hooked on the new game and went in search of mice. He became a very good mouser and even "disposed" of his catches sine he only got dry food he had to catch fresh meat.

Thank you for the education. That must have been one of those things I slept thru in school. Maybe all the tv shows about killer mice and rats got me confused.
Anyway, my husband must have caught the thing because I did not hear any nashing of teeth or squeaking last night.

i used to have mice in my utility attic of my townhouse. but when i adopted my cat, two years ago, he got rid of them. he is like a private investigator. he went snooping throughout the house, opening cupboards and closets, looking through stuff. all of the sudden, my townhouse became quiet. no more mice noise.

At least your cats earned their keep. Mine used to but not any more.
I woke up to the gnawing of little teeth and squeaking again this morning. The sleeping cat, next to my head, just kept on sleeping.
The other cat showed a little interest in the noise but did nothing that looked like hunting behavior.
My husband has put out the traps, but no mouse.
It's just wait and see.
