Hi all,
There is a website www.blackle.com that claims that it saves energy because the screen is predominantly in black. Image displayed is primarily a function of the user's colour settings and desktop graphics, as well as the colour and size of open application windows; a given monitor requires more power to display a white (or light) colour screen than a black (or dark) screen" Roberson et al, 2002.On its about page, it provides a link to blog post that proposed a theory that a black Google search engine would save a fair bit of energy since it is a search engine with high popularity. The Blackle website has a statistics of the watt of energy saved while its being used.
However, in my view, the energy saved is limited as we don't spend a lot of time on search engine. Unless all the websites online are in black, little energy will be saved. It's too dull to have all websites with black background. The website will earn a fair bit through Google Adsense if more people use it.

Hi,
I don't know that there is backlight in LCD as well. Ya, by turning off the light will save more energy. Thanks for your reply.

I think what the article say is true. But I think it is impossible to make all our desktop background/ website black. What I have done so far, I like to download a movie or program overnight due to its large size. When I do this, I set my laptop in black screensaver, because I think I read somewhere black can save energy as it doesn't show too many colors.

Hi, its a nice idea to leave the screensaver black while you leave the laptop on overnight. I never consider these factors before reading about blackle. Thanks for your reply.

Black computer screen saves more energy? Well even that is true, than it didn't help much saving energy, especially when we have to deal with long term activity...
I know that it is possible... we can set our background color to black and bright for text, etc... but its impossible when we deal with image processing...

I think energy saved will be rather negligible. Don't think it will be a popular website.
