There is not much you can do to prevent them from fading. You can 'polish' them though, using some ash from your ash tray and an old towel will give your silver ware a boost.

Cleaning or wiping it to much will fade the plating faster, so whenever cleaning silverware you should wipe it with soft towels. Another thing is to use polishing creams because it will not only help you gold and silver ware to be shiny but it will also help protect its outer layer. There are a lot of metal polishing creams out there, you just have to choose what's best for you and suits your needs the most.
