My daughter will be turning 11 next week and I am at a loss of what to get her for a gift. I have tried asking her and she isn't even sure what she wants. The only thin she mentioned is some video games (sims pets and disney dance dance revolution for the wii). I would like to get her something besides a video game, but she is hard to buy for. She is not a girly girl and doesn't like anything girly like clothes, makeup ect. She is very outdoorsy and likes video games (Ds and Wii), reading and animals. Any suggestions?

I was a tomboy myself when I was her age. One of the things my parents got me around that age that was one of the best presents ever was a camera. I'm not suggesting that you drop $300 on a digital camera for her. Although digital would be a better way to go -- lest you have to spend a fortune developing roll after roll of film. But you can get very good digital cameras in the $50-$100 range, depending on what you were thinking of spending. I would suggest avoiding the cheaper models just because they often come with outdated software or have really bad picture quality. But it would give her a way to capture the life around her. She wouldn't be glued to video game systems constantly. Taking pictures of yourself and friends being goofy is a great way to spend the day.

Instead of a gift would she enjoy if you let her pick a friend that she could have over and maybe treat them to a movie and dinner.
If she is really in to animals maybe you could do a symbolic adoption for a wild life animal in her name at the WWF-WorldWildLife. They have tons of species pictures where she can choose one and when you do the adoption I am pretty sure you get a stuffed animal and other info about the animal being helped.
My girls use to like being able to take a group of friends to either a roller skating parting or bowling.
I hope this helps. I know it is a hard age and must be even harder if she does not care to shop. My 12 year old niece loves for me to give her a gift card that she can use to shop on line at Amazon. She usually buys books, clothes and CDS.
Please wish her a Happy Birthday. She sounds like a really special girl.
Another small note- My girls are now 20 and 23 and I use try to buy them as much as I could for birthdays and holidays. At their ages now they remember very little of that but always talk about the times we did something special together.

First i want to wish your daughter a very happy birthday in advance and what i think is at this age most the kids both boys and girls show interest in these type of entertainments and it is parents duty to make their attention turn towards the sports and make them interesting part of it. Anyways a it is for her birthday gift give her a good knowledged cd that would improve her IQ.

Thanks for the reply and birthday wishes. My daughter enjoys a few spots, but already has all she needs to take part in them. A CD is a good idea, but our computer sometimes will not play them properly. I have been thinking of some books, but not sure which types.

Sometimes girls at this age have interests that they do not even know about. When I was growing up I was such a Tomboy, clinbing trees and such. My father opened my eyes to the game of hockey. That is when street hockey was seen on every street not on a video game. Maybe get her a membership at a boys and girls club? A tent for camping? A sports item? How about a telescope for her to see the planets. When you say outdoorsy it leaves much to the imagination lol Binoculors to look for birds? So many possibilities
