What jobs did you want to do when you were young?
I always wanted to be a nurse which I did become.
BUT.... other jobs I lied the fancy of were....
To be a Vicar because I thought you only worked one day a week... being a sunday!
How wrong I was.
To be a drummer because I thought you just used the drum sticks anyhow and hoped for the best!!! Again how wrong I was.
To be a conductor of a band etc because I thought you just stood there and waved the stick around how ever you wished! Again how wrong!!
What jobs did you fancy doing that you thought were very easy jobs do to but when older realized they were hard jobs to do.
Hope I have made you smile today.

I wanted to be a model (I was very tall), then a TV news achor. Then I wanted to be a journalist and go to foreign countries to write about the plights of the world. Then I wanted to be a writer - I had a rather active imagination. (Just ask my parents.) And then I decided I wanted to be a teacher. But alas, I never became any of those things. Oddly enough, the thing about teaching that most appealed to me was grading papers! And of course getting summers off didn't hurt.

The valadictorian of my graduating class' younger sister (2 grades behind us) was a local TV anchor for several years. Looking at her NOW you'd never know it. She used to win beauty contests, she really piled on the pounds after her second child.

I wanted to be a cowboy, drink whiskey, get in barroom brawls, and shoot people. Yes, I was a strange little girl.

Oh, that'd be a great scene in a movie a la A Christmas Story...

[b]I was about 10 when I began to consider what I might like to become. Being methodical me, I sat down & took every letter in the alphabet & listed the kind of career that most appealed to me. I had a bit of trouble deciding what "A" should be ("Actress? Astronomer? Artist? Author?" And a bit later on, "Astronaut?" So many choices! )
My lack of Arithmetic skills knocked out everything except Artist & Author in the "A's"...though I suppose Actress might still be doable. But I dislike the whole movie crowd scene.
Eventually I had the entire alphabet fleshed out. It was very eclectic. "B" for Botanist, "C" for Chemist (nope, there's that math block again), or more likely, Comedienne, "D" for Disk Jockey (& I actually DID do radio later, though not playing music), "E" for English Teacher...& on & on 'til I reached "Z" for Zoologist!
So what DID I wind up becoming? Well, "O" for Ornithologist got serious thought, but eventually fell off my radar screen, though I can't remember why. Anyway, long story short, I never could choose between author & artist, so I've written & illustrated my own stories! Success came, after being a "W" for Waitress & "F" for File Clerk!
And just think...here I wasted all that time going all the way to "Z" when I could've just quit at "A"!

HI ANNE, U certainly did make me smile. Isn't it odd what we thought about when we were young. Sometimes i got a huge awakening as i got older. I never thought to be anything but a hairdresser .. I had so many in the family that were i guess i just thought i'd follow in their footsteps.

When I was younger I wanted to be a librarian and then something like Jeff Corwin or Steve Irwin, wildlife documentors, but considering I don't have the ins with that kind of stuff or all that knowledge, I'm just regular average me. I am right now a Stay at home mom and am looking for a job. I have no college education or anything of the likes. I'm just and average Jane.

[b]But being a full-time mom IS a job! And one of the noblest of careers, too. You're rearing future citizens! Surely you grasp how vital that is to the world, yes? There simply IS no more important job!

I wanted to be so many different things growing up, having fads etc of just things I thought were neat. I can't say that I thought they were easy, lol, but I guess as a kid it seemed that way. In any case, Doctor, Firefighter, are two I wanted to be. lol.

This is a really good discussion, because I am sure that every kid has jobs or careers that they want to pursue when they grow up,and I am sure that as kids grow their ideas change, even if the ideas are far out,and I am sure that not a lot of kids have the same jobs and careers in mind, and it sounds like you had some interesting jobs in mind lol, when I was a kid I had all kinds of jobs I wanted to do when I grew up,one of those was being a truck driver, because my dad was a truck driver when I was little and I thought it was awesome, another was I wanted to be a doctor until I found out how much school you had to have, another was I wanted to be a lawyer but again I found out how much school you have to have, another was I wanted to be a Special Forces soldier in the Army, but I refuse to go through basic training, another was I wanted to be a cop,and I still kind of want to be a cop,but I am not sure if I could pass the basic training, and right now I would say I want to design video games because I am a big fan of video games, and it is one of my favorite pastimes and if I could design video games, then I would be able to have fun at what I do,have a great day, good luck with your life, and all of your mylotting goals, and Happy Posting.

When I was young I wanted to be a poet. I used to write short poems, even when am already in high school. I did write short stories as well. When I was in college I was disappinted of my course, education as it's my second choice to Journalism. It's martial law then here in our country that a cousin advise me not to take it as there's no freedom of speech during that time. I shifted then to business administration, accounting was my major, but am not really enjoying the course, had just to finish it for me to earn a degree, I went to office works but still my first love is writing. I then shifted to sales, leaving writing behind. I lied low at sales and found mylot. Here at least I can write.

When I was a kid, I want to be a jack-of-all-trade. Whenever I see somebody doing their job, either hard work or not, I want to be like them. Later on, during my teenage years, all I want is to work with computers, which I'm doing right now.

When I was a little, little girl I always wanted to be a gymnast. I thought it'd be super cool... but then around the age of 11 I realized that a self life of a gymnast is maybe 10 years if you start from birth.
I always wanted to write, despite my (people say imagined... but I know I'm bad) lack of skill at it. I still want to. ;P
I also wanted to sing, also managed to choose something that I lack any skill what so ever in. That dream was given up quickly.

[b]Cool Spock avatar, Kat!
If people say you're good, or even if you just desire to learn all you can about writing, then why not join a writer's workshop, & hone your skills? There are usually good ones nearly everywhere (even on the 'net would be better than nothing), & free, to boot! Sometimes, you can even find a pro writer to guide the shop all for free. I've been in plenty!
Word of advice, though: If the people in your group are snarky or judgmental, & instead of giving an honest, HELPFUL critique, try to puff themselves up by putting your work down, drop them like a hot cliche & find a good one! Nothing will mess up a shy writer, unsure of her work, more than one of those "butcher" shops!
I wanted to sing professionally, & I did sing in non-pro settings (on the street & in Church, e.g.), but I had to choose something more likely to make money and expand my soul, so I became a writer/artist instead.
You say you still "want to" write. So, as a man I once knew said to me, "Just do it!" And write to please yourself. Then if someone else happens to like it too, well that's just gravy. Even if they don't, you can still enjoy it!
Keep on writing! All the best!

I wanted to be a singer but seeing as I can not carry a tune that job was out. I also thought of being and actress but I did not like to get up in front of people so I did not do that either. I was a secretary for awhile and also a waitress.

The only job (or role, rather) that I ever recall expressing an interest in (at the age of about 7) was 'philosopher'. As a result, possibly, I never became an engine driver or a fire-fighter or a policeman. Since my family were mostly teachers, I was often told that I ought to be one too, which I vehemently resisted.
I actually drifted into jobs - or actually out of them and into something else I usually hadn't chosen ... first a printer (because the father of a school friend offered to recommend me), then a bookseller (because there was a Union related 'Catch 22' situation in the printing industry), then a librarian (because I liked books but was fed up with the place I was selling them), then a bookseller again (because I got the sack from the Library - the first ever in the long history of that Library!), then a music seller (the bookshop was paying less than I felt was the going rate), then a bookseller again (same bookshop - they had finally realised what a going rate was), then I decided to get some education and went to college to do a Computer Studies course (even that was more because I had the time than for any other reason). That led me into getting a job as a Computer Support person (by now I was 50 ... not most people's idea of an age to change careers) and ... guess what! I spent the last 5 years of my working life as an IT Teacher!
Now I am 'retired' and can philosophise ... but it's still only a hobby.

I wanted to be a veterinarian to help animals, but then I realized that I don't think I could handle seeing an animal in pain, especially the ones I couldn't do anything for. I couldn't handle putting an animal in pain in order to help them. It was all too sad! I also wanted to be a journalist, but I don't think I would have done well trying to find the stories, I would have done better had the stories come to me, and I can't write about things that don't interest me.

Hey Anne! I liked your responses! When I was young I wanted
to be a nurse too! I actually did start to go to college to
start to be a medical assistant and then did work in the
medical field. But, I never did become a nurse! I still wish
that I had been able to complete the course! I ended up
becoming a Legal Secretary after working in the medical field
for a few years. I should have stuck to medicine because it
was what I truly loved.
