I've been going through frequent bouts of depression over the last 5 years, and I wondered if the bible is able to help me? If so, which parts should I be reading? Is there any inspirational stories in the bible about depression?

Most of the time in life we allow situation and circumstance to dictate our mood and response to various event of life. God knows that we are not sufficient of our own, that is why he said in matthew 11:28-29 that we should come unto him all who are weary and carry heavy burdens of depression and He will give us REST. It is very imperative to know that God is alway interested in helping us to carry our heavy load of cares and worries. Allegradream,be rest assured that when ever you approach the throne of grace in prayer he will help you to distroy the yoke of depression in your life. This is very important,he that come to Him must believe that He able and he is the rewarder of those that deligently seek him. Believe Him and He will help you.
Only Jesus can HELP!
also check Hebrews 4:14-16
He alone knows what you are going and he has the power to help you out. Your situation may seem to be helpless because it has tarry for 5 years now but I want to assure you that our Jesus is the God of all situation. He was the one who rise the copes of Lazarus which has been laying the grave for days,he will attend to you situation.
Please, I want hear a feed back on how God help you with these few words.

I shall certainly keep you updated, many thanks for your reply, i have tried to go to church to find an inner peace but find the space very cluttered and too busy for me to clear my mind..I shall take some time out each day to read my bible but I feel that I need to go somewhere quiet to do that. I feel almost relieved to have asked the question now, I was nervous to ask but am so glad I did, Ive had some many wonderful responses :)

Hi allegradream, I have suffered with depression before, and I was helped immensely from reading the Bible, especially from the Psalms and Galatians (mostly the New Testament books). But it wasn't overnight, it was a day by day, hour by hour feeling of my hope coming back by reading the Bible daily, sometimes many times of the day because I was hurting so bad with depression. I also wanted to be left alone when I felt this way, but it's different with everyone. When I suffered with depression, I didn't want too many upbeat people around, I needed to get through it on my own timetable. God's Word is amazing and helpful for many situations we encounter. Hope to hear from you soon.

I forgot to mention, there is an online site that I go to regularly, "In Touch Ministries with Dr. Charles Stanley." He is the best truthful preacher I know, and there are great studies there too.

When I was in depression for years doctors were giving me pills but I never took them. Then I received a job where bible study is keep every week and it is there I was able to reaffirmed myself back with God. The scripture I love in the bible is 1 cor 10vs13 No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.
This is saying no matter what one is going through God has a way of turning it into positivity for him/her. I have my blog that talked about my trials and how God has help me you can visit it if you want http://ksurrina.com.
Please go to this site and read the scriptures that are outline there. http://www.hawaiichristiansonline.com/depression.html. When praying use the A.C.T.S. formula A - Acknowledgement, C-Confession, T - Thanksgiving - Supplication. Also join a church bible study.
All the best

I think that the Bible helps people in different ways. A minister friend was going through a bad time so he started to re-read his Bible. Because of the low points in his life, he said he got new meaning or appreciation for it. I can't say what scripture would be best for anyone person because everyone reads it differently for different purposes.
If the Bible is of interest, I would suggest joining a Bible study group. Here you are not only reading the words, but discussing them and it can bring more meaning to it for you.
I'm sorry about your depression, it can be crippling. I do know that you need people around you though to help uplift you. That is the reason I feel a study group would be more productive then reading on your own.
Take care and hope you what you're looking for.

Thankyou for your kind comment, I did join a bible study group, which I found very informative, we looked into depth at certain parts of the bible, but the last one was before Christmas, due to the ill health of the leader. I wonder if there is an online study group anywhere?
