So, I have been reduced to dial up and I am very very sad.
Its takes so long to load a page I might as well not get on here, but I had to check my earnings on half a dozen sites.
At least its free.
Even with the Dot Com crash a couple of free services have survived but its really really sad.
I was using a broad band connection and now I'm not even running at 56k.

Oh, ouch!
My ethernet card just finally crapped out on me... I feel sorry for you!!! That must really suck.
Good luck with that!

Try installing Opera 10 Beta, It has a Turbo Speed function for dial up connectons. One member here recently changed to this browser. He reported an increase of x4 and he is now a happy man. Being in a beta stage means ther could be stability issues but most reviews gave the thumbs up. I started using Opera 7 years ago because it was fast on a dial up.
all the best,

Actually I have not had any real stability issues but users should expect something like that when using Alpha or Beta versions.
I am using broadband (as claimed by the service provider). At certain times of the day and on weekends there is always data transfer congestion. So I set it to 'Auto'. I have been getting between X2 to X4 during these times.

I just finished downloading Opera... The install was as smooth as silk and my speed is already way way better...
I don't know about 4x faster, but I do know that things are loading much much faster...
Thank you for the tip!

The turbo function actually works really well. The compression makes images look quite ropey, but on a slow connection the performance increase is very noticeable. I have it set on auto, so for normal browsing things work normally, but then when a slow connection is detected it turns on the compression. I've been using it as my main browser since the beta was released and it's been very stable so far:)

Dial up is all that's available to me where I live. There is NO cable, and no dsl over the phone lines...only dial up. I do have a sattelite dish, but the dsl from them is wayyyyyyy too expensive! You're so right, it is so slow! Friends send me links to You Tube to check out videos and I usually just delete them. It takes forever and a day to get one of those loaded up lol. Where I live it's even hard to find an isp that has a local number. Most of them are now only offering dsl and quit their dial up services, and the ones that still have dial up don't offer a number that isn't a long distance charge. I'm glad I found a new isp even if it is only dial up lol.

It's not that bad. When I lived on an island there was really bad phone connection. I used 56k dial up modem but I was lucky when it connected with a speed of 14k, 8k was average. Sometimes I waited more than 8 minutes for a single page to load...

Oh my God 8K?
Mine is 56k and it runs around 40k-ish. Still I'm waiting a good five minutes for load mylot and longer for yahoo mail and others. Online gaming is a no go, Legends of Zork wouldn't load at all.
I'm on three different "read this email for cash" kinds of things and getting through them has become a night mare... No wonder that sort of thing didn't crop up until fairy recently.
Sitting here for hours for 2 cents an email is definitely not worth it!!!

Dial up is horrible!! BUT it can be tolerated. I used to have DSL and we all took it for granted. It was only like $19.99 and when we moved to a tiny town now it costs like $39.00 and I refuse to pay that. So I am on dial up and its horrible but until I begin to earn more online I have to keep it, you know what I mean?Once I begin to make at least $30.00 online then I can excuse my need and pay the extra but until then I will have to grin and bear it.

Sorry you had to be reduced to dial-up. It sucks, I know. I've been using it forever! Okay, not that long, but I've been on dial-up since becoming part of the Internet world. That was over 7 years ago, so I feel your pain. However, it doesn't stop me from posting on mylot. I like this site too much to let a slow connection stop me!

What happened with your broadband service before? Did you downgrade your service in order to save more? Before i used to have dial up but since it is too slow i decided to switch to broadband. I somehow considered and weighed things even though i can save more money on dial up but since i an considering the fact that i need it for my studies and for online job like here in mylot, i decided to in for the faster one.
