Cd drive question

My husband's cd drive doesn't "read" that there is a cd in it when there is, it doesn't automatically start up when he puts it in the computer and he can't play any music cd's, however it does play dvd movies. He took it to his cousin's today to see if he could fix it and he was stumped. He couldn't understand why it would read and play movies but not cds.
Can anyone help? My hubby is really frustrated.

This is one possible reason.
1.it does not automatically start because the autoplay feature for cds is disabled.
2.You might need to clean the lens.
What windows are you using I might be able to help?
