I use to use powder, but I started using liquid and I now almost exclusively buy liquid. With the liquid you don't have the chance of powder not dissolving and staying on close. Also, the detergent brand I like, Mrs. Meyer's, only comes in liquid. I only use natural detergent, so it is also safe if it gets into waterways. And, I always recycle the plastic bottle that my detergent comes in.

Yeah, it is wrong that some places don't recycle certain things. A long time ago I remember our area didn't recycle but a couple types of plastic. But, now they recycle just about all, with the exception of thin film plastic.
I too would buy powdered box detergent if I could not recycle plastic. I would just start buying Seventh Generation or another natural brand that sells the powdered version.
That is great that you put the environment first. I think more people should !

I used to use powder but since i had to shell out a lot of money to have my septic tank pressure washed because the powder does not fully dissolve so it builds up in the tank and become like stone.

I go to a laundry mat to do my laundry. I put the soap in first before I put the clothes in. It helps prevent the soap form clumping up!

My mom's using powder detergent because it's easier to use, all you need is a scoop. It's cheaper because it is packed in cardboard or plastic. It is not sticky when accidentally spilled and it comes in different variety. The ones with bleach, with conditioners and cologne scented ones.

I prefer powder detergent when i do the laundry, because it is the most cheaper and convenient and safe from your hand.

blu65packer,
I prefer to use the liquid detergent . . for a few reasons. The first being if you put that scoop thing back in the box and if it is just a bit wet . .the detergent will form clumps on it . . kinda messy!I like the ease of the liquid soap.
And as I am very eco friendly i find ways to reuse the plastic bottle...I usually use the one with the handle . . .. here are a few of my favorites
*If you cut the bottle in half you can use it as a dog waste scoop . Those bottle come with a handle so it is oh so easy to Scoop
*In winter (i live in the northeast so this one really comes in handy) I use a clean and throughly dry bottle and I fill it with the salt that we apply to the icy walkway . .when the storm hits . .you just hold it by the handle and sprinkle away!
*The lids make great measuring cups, a holder for paper clips (if you take a tape magnet around the edge it is even better), holder for safety pins, bobie pins, hair clips . .the list never ends!
*and the best way to save money is to reuse the bottle but instead of buying a new one .. refill it with homemade laundry detergent . .
happy lotting to you

I try to be very environmental but I like liquid better because to me it cleans the clothes better. Powder while using cold water will not alway disolve completely. I agree about using a box over the plastic bottle but I just never liked powder.
