How much was your last vet bill?

I took Sherlock to the vet late last week. He needed his annual heartworm test (he takes preventative heartworm meds, but they still do an annual test), and the annual parasite test. He had neither heartworm nor parasites. He also needed to have his anal glands "expressed" (that's the way they put it), and he got his nails clipped too. They handle him way better than I do when I try to trim his nails. Anyway, with all that and the cost of the office visit, the total cost was $104.93. What was the cost of the last vet bill you had for your pet?

Pets can be very expensive. I haven't taken my dog in awhile & she needs to go i'm sure. High bills to the vet don't fit very well into what i try to live on. Have a happy night.

I think a lot of people have a hard time "saving" or "budgeting" a vet visit into their monthly budget, but in the end it is sooooooo worth it! Pets are part of the family =]

wow! This is so expensive. have you ever thought of paying health insurance for yor
sherlock? My daughter had a little dog in NC and she had health insurance as he was so sickly. She got him from a pound or somewhere and she chose the most sickly lokking dog thatt hey had to show! It cost her a bomb until she got insurance. This is a whole lot of money - but I now that you think he is worth it!

I looked into insurance. It was too expensive. Sherlock never gets sick, I only have to take him in when shots are due. He got his three year shots last year, so I have a couple of more years before he needs anymore. Actually, my vet seems to be cheaper than a lot of people get with their vet. The person who responded second to this discussions paid way more for shots for their dog than I did mine.

Maybe it was because my daughter's puppy was so sickly that it suited her to have insurance? I don't really know. I'm happy though that this is not a frequent vet bill that you have to pay as your dog is healthy. Blessings

My last Vet bill was $125 for antibiotics and a check up after Humphrey got into a tussle with a neighborhood cat one of his rare treks into the back yard. He had an infected wound. That was awhile ago and he has to go again soon for his booster shots and I think there might be a tic in his neck that needs to be lanced out. Don't know how he got it because he hardly ever goes out but he seems to get in trouble every single time he ventures forth. Fortunately, he's basically a homebody.

His proper name is Humphrey Bogart II. His father was Humphrey Bogart I and we always called him Bogey so we just started calling this one Humphrey. I think I actually like Bogey better as a cat name but his father was still alive when he was born and the name was in use. The dad was a great cat and so is the son.

um..close to $400.
i have a brother and sister set of cats, and like siblings, they fight occasionally.
well, this time the girl bit the boy and he fell backwards off a dresser (that they weren't supposed to be on)and sprained his ankle.
his foot swelled, and he turned out to have an abcess too.
i didn't actually see her do this, but i just know it had to be her.the 3rd cat never gets involved in fights.
so,xrays, shots, wound clean out,antibiotics..the whole nine yards.
she got her catnip docked for a month after that lil' incident.

You do realise they don't have to do the annual tests. It is only something they should recommend if heartworm infestation is expected. If they are telling you that you have to have it done, then they are pulling your leg and trying to get more money out of you, but if you are happy to have the tests done, then go for it. I personally wouldn't, but each to their own.
My last vet bill was about $200. That was to have my cat desexed, wormed and vaccinated. After that, she was kept indoors at all times and never went back to the vets. I wasn't very appreciative of having a hyper active cat after each visit, and she cost me a small fortune in curtains!

You're right of course. I think I consented to the heartworm test because he already needed his nails trimmed (I get nervous doing it myself), and he had had an upset stomach. I also needed to buy more heartworm medicine, so I thought I'd be safe and make sure. But thanks for reminding me about that. That test isn't necessary. Sherlock doesn't need any more vaccines for three years, and while I'll get those for him in three years, I think that will be when he is tested for heartworm again. I think it would be okay for me to wait three years for that test, don't you? I mean, he is taking the medicine every month.

Every 3 years for the test would be fine. I doubt though that they are needed at all because you are taking the measures of administering a heartworm pill on a regular basis.

Mine was like $250. I got my god all his shoots. They were three year shoots so they were alittle bit more expensive, but I dont have to get him vaccianted for 3 years.

No my dog is small also. I have a Maltese Shitzu mix. He had to get like 5 shots and they all were 3 year but one. I cant remember which. Also I had to get him some more sential(which is his flea and heartworm medicine) so that was another reason why my bill was almost $250.00

Hi AmbiePam; Well my last visit was a check up. Emergency as my girl, Roxy was throwing up violently. About wight times in one hour. Turns out she ate something that didn't agree with her. Thank the Lord! My cost was $55. The one before that was $450, another emergency. An injury that almost killed my puppy. One that I have yet to talk about. Very traumatic. Thankfully she had good doctors and a lot of people around her that love her bunches.
'I take my dog to the vet to have her glands expressed and nails clipped. I do everything else, such as baths, hair, diet and exercise.

Yes, me too. My dog gets a bath once a month unless he gets himself into some kind of messy stuff (Once on a walk he stopped and started rolling around on the grass. When he got up he smelled like urine. That was the only time he did it though.). I have clipped Sherlock's nails before, but I'm paranoid I'm going to do it wrong and hurt him.

My last bill was for over $200 for my cat vaccination including and exam ($65!!!!)and wellness blood test. I was very mad at the vet, because they didn't let me know upfront about the cost...I still have my dogs to take to the vet...it took her 3 minutes to do an exam...

Ohhhhhh, I hate to think about it. Kash's last vet bill was $115.00 because they had to check her blood because I needed her groomed. This is because she's old, my little honey is 16 years, and she needs to be "put under" to shave her or groom her and get rid of any mats that she has. So, they had to check to make sure she didn't have anything seriously wrong with her, like diseases, in order for her to be put under anesthetic. She was fine, they shaved her and bathed her, and so far, so good. She has this really pain in the neck fur, that underneath (she's really long-haired) is like duck down and mats very easily. She hates, completely and totally, hates to be brushed or combed and as much as I try to do this, I'm by myself, and she's hard to hold on to. So, she gets brushed like, for about 4-5 minutes and she's done. So, once every 1-2 years, she goes in for a complete groom and shave, and that's what it costs me......but she is so worth it. She's my buddy and I love her!

I spent way too much on my dog last year. He got cancer and the vet said she could operate and get it all and he would be okay. So I paid $1600.00 to have him operated on only for the cancer to come back about 5 months later. So she wanted to operate one more time, so sure she could get it all, and another $1000.00 bill.
Well, wouldn't you know it, the cancer came back about a month later. So she wanted to operate again and I said no this time. I wasn't about to spend a whole bunch more money and have him not get well. I seriously think my vet took advantage of me and she just wanted the money for the surgeries. The reason I say this is because I talked to some other vets after all of this and they told me they would have advised me right from the start to have him put donw, which is what I ended up doing after all. And then costing me another $300 to have him put down.
I loved my dog, Puglsey, but he was already 11 years old and I was not working much at the time so the money part really hurt me as I had to take out loans to do this.

thats about what i got done to coco 2 weeks ago except for the heartworm test. guess i should have had it done. now im worried. anyway it was 93 bucks.

Is CoCo on heartworm medication already? If CoCo is, then you can probably put the test off and not worry. If she isn't on the heartworm medication, then when you can afford it, she would need to have that done. Heartworm is very hard and painful to cure. But I hope you don't worry. If you call your local ASPCA, maybe they can tell you where you can get a heartworm test done cheaper than a local vet. I know there are some animal shelters that spade and neuter animals much cheaper than local vets, so it kind of makes sense they could do a heartworm test cheaper, don't you think?

The last vet bill I received was for my dog and one of my cat’s vaccinations; it was for $150, the one before that was for the same amount and was to get my other cat’s teeth cleaned. Vets are very expensive; a few years ago we took our bird with bald patches to a vet and he proceeded to look at the animal and tell me that everything was fine because the bird was just malting. The consultation lasted around three minutes the most and I was charged $37! We see another vet now; he does not charge if nothing is prescribed for the pet which I think is a bit more honest!

Yeah, I know! An office visit, just having the vet look at my Sherlock costs 35 dollars. But on the plus side, before this last time I went in to get my dogs anal glands "expressed", and she only charged me for that, and not for the office visit. She doesn't usually do that, but this time I was grateful she did.

I took my puppy to the vet last month for the shots and bought some heartworm pills, it costs me $160.00... it was out of my expectation, actually I can get the pills at the store but I would need some stupid receipt form the doctor something like that so I need to get it at the vet...

I have a horse and my vet bill is out of this world! Over the past 5 years or so I let the bill go higher and higher! I probaly could of tried to pay it up monthly but I never did! So 3 times a year my horse get shots, which all horses should get to keep them health. He gets his teethed floated once a year. My horse has had health issues like a heart mur mur diagnosed and had some lameness issues! I even had some test on him to see if he had another health problem! It came up negative! I know my horse has this certain health issue but I don't want to see my vet bill get any bigger then it is! I do make monthly payments but service charges are the real killer for me! Half of my monthly payments ends up covering the service charges! It sucks but you vet bill isn't over $1,500.00 like mine is! Horses are more expensive then dogs!

My old coot got some blood work and medication, it was over $200.
Right now his food and meds cost me almost 10% of my net pay every month.

I think you do! The time before when I took Sherlock in, he needed his anal glands "expressed" again. She was kind enough not to charge me an office visit. Just the office visit is 35 dollars. I don't know why, but that time she just charged me for the "expressing."

Hi AmbiePam! Our most expensive vet bill would have been when we got our shihtzu Katie spayed, but our last vet bill was for her yearly check up, shots, etc and it was around 100 bucks! Pets are not cheap to have that is for sure!

That's not bad! My last vet bill was, I believe, around $170.00. I once paid well over $600.00, but that was when my dog had 4 pups and I had them all in there for their first shots plus Frontline Plus for all of them.
Actually, when you think about it, it really isn't expensive. If we were to have the same treatments as our furry friends, we'd be charged one heck of a lot more than what the vets charge! Sometimes, I'd rather go to the vet instead of my own doctor! LOL
I had an old dog awhile back who developed arthritis and hip dysplasia and he was put on some kind of steroid for 2 weeks, then Rimadyl and he was running around all over the place after having such trouble even standing up! I WANT SOME OF THAT! LOL

First of all, I dread going to the vet because I know that no matter what I take my pet in for, the bill always ends up being over $100.00. Every little thing can add up so fast. Just to walk in the door, I think it is about $40.00. When you have several pets as I do, you know that the vet bills can add up fast, even for minor visits. God forbid they have to have surgery or chronic treatment for something. Since I have multiple pets, it would be cost prohibitive for me to get insurance on them. I guess that is an alternative for someone who has less pets. But, I know what you mean. It really hurts your pocketbook to have to take your "kids" to the vet for any reason. I wish it was cheaper.

My last vet bill was for my pit bull before taking her through obedience classes was more than $200. I don't vaccinate her anymore, so I had her titered for all of her vaccines, which is more expensive.
However, because I don't take any of my animals in for vaccinations anymore (I don't believe they need them), I don't spend too much at the vet's office.
And my animals are still very happy and healthy.

Well, a lot of pets aren't really exposed to things like rabies, so I can see why you wouldn't get them some of their shots. It makes sense. My apartment complex requires us to actually show proof of the shots. So even if I didn't want for him to have them, I'd have to so I could stay in my apartment.
