Spiders on the brain.

It is a well known fact that the average human swallows up to 7 spiders a year while they sleep. This intersting tidbit of information came to me over the weekend while I was sitting at my computer, and a white spider decided to bungee jump from the ceiling and land on my shoulder. I saw it out of the corner of my eye... and I of course screamed like a girl and almost passed out from fright. Dont laugh, I'd like to see how YOU would have reacted!! But I digress. Back to my point (and yes I do have one). While we sleep, our mouths sometimes open. We cant help it.. we are asleep! But during this time a spider on the ceiling might take the oppurtunity to drop down and crawl into the nice dark, peacfull cavern... aka.. our mouth. Thats all well and good... but my question is..... What happens if we are sleeping on our side?? Where do you think the spider will go instead?? Think about it for a moment... and after your done freaking out, respond to this discussion LOL. Needless to say... from now on I will be sleeping with the blankets pulled over my head.

OMG Tee...Only you could make me happy to have a spider jump in my mouth!!! I can warn you though, hiding under the covers doesn't help!!! That just gives them warm, dark, peaceful place to crawl & you still have the same problem. They still have 2 places to choose from once trapped under the cover except now they're scared!!!!

I'd suggest ear plugs & a face mask. Won't stop them completely, but can slow them down some. I woke up one morning & felt a tickling near the opening to my ear. In my sleepy stupor I stuck my finger in my ear & went dayum. I felt little legs kicking. I immediately jumped up & started trying to get it to crawl back out. NO luck. To this day I don't know what kind of bug it was. I just know every time it freaked out & started kicking its little legs, it hurt like hell!!! I went into work & that little sucker kicked off & on all day long. I get home & start thinking how I could stop it. I fixed an eyedropper of baby oil & put several drops in my ear. My critter kicked like crazy for a few seconds & then nothing. I waited about 15 minutes & took an ear wash kit & rinsed my ear out with warm water over the sink. When finished, I found a couple legs but NO body. My ear no longer hurt though. In 59 years that has only happened once. That makes me wonder where the other 412 critters went!!!!

I doubt that has ever or ever will happen to me! I hate spiders with a passion and I am a light sleeper! I would freak out if this ever happen to me! Every year I get spiders in my apartment and I try to find ways to keep them out! If I'm not doing that I have set up spider traps! This is how much I hate spiders! I really hate spiders! I know the are part of life but they aren't getting close to me! No way no how!

Yes Spider traps! I got them through a Miles Kimball magazine. They are rectangle shaped small cardboard traps. They have some thing them that attracks the. When they go in the traps they stick some kind of glue! That is what i was talking about.

Nah, I'm not afraid of being invaded by insects from inside:D I don't have much spiders at home too, and if even some of them would decide to land on my bed, they would surely get crushed, because I'm tossing and turning pretty much at night:D

By the way, it reminds me of System of a Down's song "Spiders". Watch the clip, it has a little bit to do with that discussion. A very little bit:D

Tee I was grossed out when you said 7 spiders a year!!! I know I MUST be abnormal, because I for one don't sleep with my mouth open. If it falls open while I'm sleep, it never stays open long because I can't stand the feel and taste of dry mouth *bleck* Plus I don't sleep on my back much either, even though the durn thing could land on the pillow and decide to.... eww SEE!!! Now you got me thinking about it *eyerolls*

Hahaha maybe you should let a spider take up residence in your mouth to help you with your problem of catching flies in your nose LOL!!!! It would be pest control!!! I'm sorry Im still laughing about that story!! Hahahahaha!!!

actually I have about this many times everytime I see a spider in the house I become obsessed last night I had one crawl at me while I was on the computer the thing was big enough that i could see it crawling in the dark! I have had spiders get in bed and it creeps me out I end up not being able to sleep in my bed because i keep thinking about things like what if one crawls in my ear or up my nose while I am sleeping

Ewwww Im so feeling your pain about being dive bombed by spiders. The one that landed on me was so white that it was almost clear... and I saw its little eye brows wiggled as it made a mad dash to suck my brains out!! And I actually cant sleep at all if I accidently think about what lives in beds. Trust me you do not want to take a microscope to any mattress.. I dont care who you think you are LOL!!

I'm getting ready for bed now, and this is all I need to hear. I would hate for a bug to crawl into my nose and down my throat and into my lungs while I sleep. I hope that's not possible. Well, sleep tight tonight all.

I've heard this so called "fact" before as well, however, I have also heard that it is 7-8 spiders in your lifetime. I feel that the source of this "fact" should really be determined before you spend your nights in sleepless fright. Also let's say for arguments sake that you do swallow 7 spiders a year in your sleep. You never knew it before you were told this fact, right??? So it shouldn't matter so much now that you know.

Ewwwww.... ikky.... Thank you for putting that into my head. I'd never read or thought of that before in my whole life. Unfortunatly I probably won't be able to NOT think of it from now on since you pointed it out to me. LOL. From now on I'll probably be like you and sleeping with the blankets pulled over my head.

Good day... I think well I can't think but then again I don't want to imagine a spider creeping into my mouth in my slumber. The taste? the crawling? the struggle? the swallow? and finally the plunge into the acid of my stomach. I really hate to imagine it.

You know, I have heard that before and have thought about it off and on. It is one of those things that once you hear it, it is hard to forget. If that is true, whether just one spider or seven, that is gross. I get lots of spiders in my house. I get more black widows than anything. So, maybe I have built up a tolerance to their venom is I have eaten 7 a year since I have lived in this house . I am a vegan, so I am sure they know that and stay away from my mouth . I definately didn't laugh at your reaction to the bungee spider. I know the heebeegeebee feeling that comes with a spider jumping in your face. It is funny how something so tiny can make us jump and scream in fear. Happy spider sleep eating!

That is very disgusting. I hope that there will be no spiders that would enter my mouth while I am asleep because I sleep with my mouth open and saliva dripping all over my pillow
